Commodore's Levee
- from Commodore Rick Humphrey

I was very pleased to meet with so many of you at the Commodore's Levee this past New Year's Day.  It was a great event that Paula and I really enjoyed.  There are a number of members to thank for their help with the program, including Patrick Flynn for his work as MC, Paul Brennan, Bob Hedley, Paul Lefneski, Joanne Wright, and Alison Liddell for their help with the Contribution Awards, Board Members who served hors d'oeuvres and of course, our Staff who added to the event with their service and good food.  A highlight of the Levee was the 80th Anniversary video developed by our Past Commodore, Barbara Jones.  At the Levee, I asked all those present to raise their glasses to the following toast:

May every day of the New Year

Glow with good cheer and happiness

to you, your family, and friends.

May I take this opportunity to extend this wish to all Members of Ashbridge's Bay Yacht Club.  I thank you all for your contribution to our Club and ask that you continue to seek opportunities to promote our Club at every opportunity in the coming year.  We look to our future as we continue to build on our 80 years of service to our members and to our community.

Respectfully submitted,

Rick Humphrey, Commodore

ABYC Adult Keelboat Program
at the Boat Show!

- from Diane Schulman and Peter Woodall, Committee Chairs

___________________________________________________________________________

Humber College Sailing and Power Boating Centre, which partners with ABYC by providing instructors for the Adult Keelboat Learn to Sail program, has graciously offered us the opportunity to promote our joint program at their booth at the Boat Show this year.  The booth is #1769 in the sailboat area.

Please stop by, or tell anyone you know who is interested in learning to sail this summer to come visit us or one of the other ABYC volunteers, for more information.  Students in our program receive a one-year Introductory Associate Membership at ABYC, so it is a great way to introduce them to sailing and our club.

This year the Learn-to-Sail Open House will be on Thursday, May 9 from 6-9.  Think spring!!

New Year, more parties (work parties)
- from Sue Hamilton, Work Party Co-ordinator
______________________________________________________________________
The long wait is finally over - work parties have started back up for 2013!  Frivolous party time is over - serious party time (work party that is) is starting.

We are continuing to do marine wall repairs in two areas, one by the mast crane and one by the blue wall.  This coming Saturday should be warm and we can use at least 6 people to help finish putting the mast crane wall together while the ground is still thawed.  We are also getting underway on the blue wall over the next few weeks.

Priority request:
We are looking for a person who can help Stephen run the project when Stephen cannot be there (he will continue to be the main lead in terms of deciding what needs to be done when), and also help to run the two separate wall projects at the same time (Stephen at one location, the new lead at the other).  Please consider volunteering for this much needed position, and send an email to [email protected] or speak directly to Stephen on Saturday.

Mike Leroux and team continue with various dock repairs.
Alfie Nonnewitz and the famous Bubbler Boys are out every week and could use a hand.
Joe Simpson and Roger Marsh have various odd jobs.

And once we have budget clearance (end of January) we will have the following jobs:
- repair of the work raft/sailing school rafts
-  pile driver repairs (that sounds fun!)
-  chain replacement (yes, more chains!)
-  installation of the sump pumps for bubbling the new docks
-  installation of additional safety equipment to be installed on the docks.

2013 Lecture Series kicks off
January 10, 2012 - 7:30 p.m.
- from Jim Allen
__________________________________________________________________________

Diane Reid will kick off the ABYC Winter Lecture Series with a recap of her campaign to-date.  Diane is now in the middle of her final qualifying stages for the 2013 Mini Transat race from France to Guadeloupe.

She will bring us up-to-date on her qualifying events in 2012, including her racing in the Mini Fastnet race in 30+ knot winds and 30 foot waves in the Irish Sea.  Diane promises to have some exciting pictures of her qualifying adventures.

Diane will also fill us in on the remaining qualifying events that begin in early spring in France leading up to the October 2013 Start Line for 84 Mini-Transat boats.

This will be Diane's last ABYC appearance before she leaves for training in France one week after the Toronto Boat Show.  Come out and join us in sending Diane off with a strong ABYC show of support.

And when you are at the Boat Show be sure to stop by Diane's booth and visit with her personally before she begins this next leg of her Dream Adventure representing ABYC while racing across the Atlantic Ocean in her Open 20.

Upcoming Budget
- from Commodore Rick Humphrey
___________________________________________

As we come to a new Budget year, I ask that you place two dates into your calendars. The first is the Pre-Budget Meeting to be held on Monday, January 21 at 7 pm.  This is a useful opportunity for the Board to present the Budget and have a dialogue with members.  Your input at this meeting does result in a tweaking of the Budget in the intervening week prior to the General Meeting. We value that input.  It is your chance to delve into the Budget in a way that you cannot in a regular General Meeting.  The second date to mark on your calendar, of course, is the General Meeting itself which takes place on Monday, January 28 at 7 pm.  General Meetings are an important "touch base" for members to hear what is going on in the Club, to provide feedback, and to bring up issues of concern. The Budget will be presented in general terms and a vote will be conducted.  I encourage you to attend or send your proxy.  A Notice of Meeting will be sent to members within the week.

The Finance Committee and our Vice-Commodore of Financial Services have been working hard to present a budget that is fair, yet addresses some pressing issues.  Your Board has just passed one working meeting as a group where some hard decisions were made regarding the Budget.  I address one of those issues that will affect us all and possibly through all member categories.  Over the past two years, we have been alerting the Members to the issue of our Seawall and its state of repair.  We are at a time where major decisions must be made in the financing of the wall replacement itself, the methods used to re-build the walls, and the question of who does the actual work to replace them.  This is a big initiative that has arrived and we must address it with serious consideration.  There are a couple of workgroups that are looking into the processes of this issue and even conducting experiments currently under the auspices of both the Vice-Commodore of Marine Services, and the Vice-Commodore of Planning.

The long and short of it is, that if we are able to do some of the work ourselves, then it would be a more cost-effective way of achieving the goal.  However, we will not be able to avoid all professional costs. Over the years, ABYC has tackled many large projects with little outside professional help.  In the case of the dock project though, we took advantage of a professional welder working full time for 11 weeks. As it was for the dock project, probably a mixed solution is more likely for this project.  Can we still accomplish this?  Well, the answer lies in the resolve, the time, and the talents of the whole membership and not just a few.  It will certainly challenge us with upfront strategic thinking, project planning, and financial and personnel resource allocation as this will be a multi-year, multi-faceted project.

I write this article not to alarm you or to be all "gloom and doom".  This is a project that is doable, but it is also a project that will need our attention for the long term.  Your support through your serious consideration and input is solicited.

Respectfully submitted,

Rick Humphrey, Commodore
