We wish everyone a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

New look:  We are introducing a new banner and new colours with this edition of Ship2Shore.  Due to a recent initiative to standardize ABYC's communication tools, there was a need to update our banner and Senior Member Lauren Stephens designed a beautiful one.  Also, our colours now conform with those recommended in the new ABYC Style Guide.

Name change:  In addition to the banner & colour changes, we are making a slight change to the name of the newsletter.  The changes to the banner provided us with an opportunity to deal with the confusion regarding the spelling of the name of ABYC's newsletter.  Our readers spell the name in a variety of ways such as Ship To Shore, shiptoshore, ship2shore and S2S.  In order to eliminate this confusion, the name will now be "Ship2Shore" or the shorter "S2S".

We also want to thank Senior Member Scott Elliott for providing the banner that has been used for nearly 5 years.  Scott has been very helpful over the years with changes and updates to the banner and we want to acknowledge his contribution.

2013 New Year's Levee
_______________________________________________________________________________

On a beautiful bright sunny day, a large crowd attended the 2013 New Year's Levee held at ABYC yesterday, January 1, 2013.  After greeting members and guests with his wife Paula, Commodore Rick Humphrey toasted the new year, then introduced one of the highlights of the day; a very entertaining  video of ABYC members (Call Me "A-Bs") created by Senior Member Barbara Jones.  The link to the video is located elsewhere in this newsletter.

A new tradition at ABYC's New Year's Levee is to present Contribution Awards to deserving members who made outstanding or special contributions for the benefit of ABYC during 2012.

Tipping our staff

To All Members,

At the September General Meeting, the following proposal was brought to the floor for further Board consideration:

"to put a mandatory 15% Gratuity across the board to treat our staff fairly."

Members do from time to time forget to show our staff that we appreciate the good service that we were given through tipping.  I would hesitate to institute a courtesy as mandatory as then it is no longer a courtesy but an obligation.  It is my belief that we just may need to be reminded that tipping is not deducted from your Minimum Billing.  On the other hand, many of us may not know our tipping options.

When your minimum billing balance is still available, there are several options available for tipping that should be pointed out:

1.  Leave cash
2.  Provide your credit/debit card for the tip amount, or,
3.  A not widely known, but easy method:  Add the tip on the tip line of your bill and Lidia will be kind enough to ensure the server gets tipped and you get billed based on your regular billing method in the office

I would like to share this recent story I encountered on tipping.

There's a broad range of etymologies for the term "tipping".

The charming story we all have probably heard is that "tip" was an acronym for "To Insure Promptness".  Back to the 18th century, the story goes that patrons would drop a few pence into a box bearing the label to ensure promptness as a measure to encourage a greater display of vigor on the part of the generally listless attendants.  But it is more likely that this story is another urban legend or what we call a backronym, an amusing acronym story made up to explain a word which wasn't originally an acronym at all.

.         Another apocryphal story has it that a California restaurant had a sign on the door "Please do not insult our staff by tipping", but inside, there on the counter, was a jar by the cash register clearly labeled "Insults".

This article can be found at this link if you would like to read the whole article. http://www.docstoc.com/docs/5728449/The-Tradition-of-Tipping-The-hospitality-industry-and-any

Clearly this custom has been around for a very long time.  As members we should tip our staff for good service and, by sharing in this custom, we can ensure that good staff are retained.

Diane Reid will kick off the ABYC Winter Lecture Series with a recap of her campaign to-date.  Diane is now in the middle of her final qualifying stages for the 2013 Mini Transat race from France to Guadeloupe.

She will bring us up-to-date on her qualifying events in 2012, including her racing in the Mini Fastnet race in 30+ knot winds and 30 foot waves in the Irish Sea.  Diane promises to have some exciting pictures of her qualifying adventures.

Diane will also fill us in  on the remaining qualifying events that begin in early spring in France leading up to the October 2013 Start Line for 84 Mini-Transat boats.

This will be Diane's last ABYC appearance before she leaves for training in France one week after the Toronto Boat Show.  Come out and join us in sending Diane off with a strong ABYC show of support.

And when you are at the Boat Show be sure to stop by Diane's booth and visit with her personally before she begins this next leg of her Dream Adventure representing ABYC while racing across the Atlantic Ocean in her Open 20.
