ABYC Racing Awards

ABYC's racers held their annual Racing Awards Night last Saturday evening with a lot of trophies and special awards handed out.

Some of the major trophies and awards went to the following recipients:

Ashbridge Trophy
____________________________________

This is the most prestigious sailing award in the club.  It is awarded to the skipper who, while  flying the ABYC burgee, brings the most prestige upon the club through accomplishments in either, or a combination of, club, and/or local and/provincial, and/or national, and/or international competition.

The skipper will be selected by a jury of his or her peers  and the jury shall remain secret.

The winner for 2012 is Stephen Trevitt (Crime Scene)

The following was read by Rear Commodore Paul Brennan:

Here is a record that is tough to beat:

Record for Crime Scene racing in IRC and LORC:

Club Regattas:

ABYC Regatta - 1st. RCYC Regatta - 1st. PCYC Regatta - 1st. QCYC Regatta - 1st.
EYC Regatta - 2nd. on a Tie Breaker for First,

These races combined for the IRC Series Champion - 14 points ahead of the second place boat.

Across the Lake at the Youngstown Level Regatta - another First, 3 points ahead of second place.

Crime Scene did 30 course races over these 6 events, with 16 firsts, 8 seconds, 5 thirds and 2 fourths.

As for the distance events:

Susan Hood Race - 2nd. In Division, 3rd. Overall. Lake Ontario 300 - 2nd. In division, 8th. Overall - This would have been a better result if they didn't hit that rock at Main Duck Island.

Meanwhile, back at the club:

First in Series A, First in Series C,
First in the Archie Walker Race, First in the Single-handed Race, and First in Division 1.

We thank Steve for graciously letting others win in the Summer Bell Buoy and the Vertigone/Whiplash Challenge races.

All of these great results were achieved with a crew almost entirely from ABYC:

Gord Burt, Eric Moran, Ryan Morin, Will Rea, Geoff Eaton, David Holmes, Neil Payne, Paul McDonald, Karen Albert, Michelle Parker, Mark McGuiness, Ralph Weckesser, Doug Hartkorn and Derek Van DerMeer.

This Award is a tribute to first class boat preparation, solid teamwork by the crew, and a talented helmsman.

For 2012, the Ashbridge Trophy, awarded for bringing the most prestige upon the club through  accomplishments in club and external events, is given to Stephen Trevitt & Crime Scene.

The winner is Wendy Loat (Looney Tunes)

The following was read by Rear Commodore Paul Brennan:

First in Series B.

First ABYC boat at the Summerville.

Second at the ABYC Open.

Second in the George Coyles.

Second in the Archie Walker.

And overall winner in her division at ABYC, this boat also showed an exceptional performance outside the club:

For the LORC championships, FIRST in division 4,

Second in the IRC Fall Series, including a 2nd overall in the Summerville, and a 1st in the Boswell, this boat even made it past Oakville with a respectable finish at Bronte Rocks .

The Stapleton Trophy goes to Wendy Loat & Looney Tunes, aptly aided by regular crew Steve Turner and Rebecca Crumlish, and assorted guest crew.

Commodore's Award
__________________________________________

Presented by the Commodore for best representing ABYC in any branch of yachting, inside or outside the Club.

Awarded to Wendy Loat.

The following was read by Commodore Rick Humphrey:

For many years, Wendy Loat has flown the ABYC burgee while very successfully racing Looney Tunes. You, at the very least, would know of her through her regular contribution of "Racing News" in our own S2S throughout the season. There is much more, however.

As a National certified judge here at ABYC and at events from one end of the lake to the other and beyond, she has demonstrated the ABYC values, and gained the respect of those that work with her, and those that find themselves at protests at which she is adjudicating. Wendy sits on the OSA Appeals committee, and chairs the OSA Judge's committee.

She has trained and mentored many of our members, and many other prospective judges, in the process and procedures required to do this important job fairly and competently.
Finally, Wendy has extended her reach by taking on the position of President of LORC. In that position, I know that she will help that body to grow and to continue to add strength to our sport.   We thank her for her dedicated work.

In recognition of her outstanding contribution to our club, the positive role model that she exhibits, and for the demonstrated extension of our Club's values to the sailing community at large, I am pleased to award the 2012 Commodore's Award to Wendy Loat.

Leo Cotey Award

Presented annually to the woman who has contributed most to ABYC during the year.

For her longstanding and painstaking contribution to the Awards at the club, this year's recipient is:

Associate Member Alison Liddell

Alice Patterson
Memorial Award
_________________________________

Awarded in recognition of Services to Boat Racing.

Awarded to Elizabeth MacIntyre

Liz MacIntyre has been working on race committee for decades, competently taking on the painstaking task of Chief Recorder.

She is known from one end of the lake to the other, and as far South as Miami.  When they finish 6 abreast and each recorder has a different 3 of the 6 written down, and the Race Officer is still tongue-tied and trying to catch his breath, Liz manages to bring order out of the chaos, and ensure that competitors are fairly scored.  In rough weather, when others on the committee boat are feeding the fish and clutching their clipboards, Liz will knit a sweater and mittens and keep a smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye.

Her skills have saved many races from being thrown out, and prevented countless requests for scoring corrections.  Thank you and congratulations to Liz!

Rolly McKillop Award
___________________________________________

Presented annually to a member for volunteer services rendered to the club.  (To be awarded by the Vice Commodore - Marine Services).

Awarded to Associate Member Harvey Swanson

When he wasn't racing, Associate Member Harvey Swanson contributed many hundreds of hours to the floating docks project, by organizing work lists, documenting, and accurately cutting tons of the steel that went into the project.

Those of you who have tried to load beer onto a boat from a tender understand the importance of a solid dock to racers!  Thank you and congratulations to Harvey!

Stacy Trophy
___________________________

This trophy is presented annually to the member who makes the greatest contribution to developing a lifelong love of sailing in young sailors, whether through keelboat or dinghy racing or cruising.

Presented to Finley & Sophie McEwen

Read by Rear Commodore Paul Brennan:

For many contribution trophies, I receive no nominations at all.  For the Stacy trophy, I received multiple nominations for the same people.  I'll read one of them:

I would like to nominate Finley McEwen for the Stacy award.  Finley, along with his wife Sophie McEwen, work tirelessly as the ABYC sailing school directors.  Of note, is his creation of the ABYC Junior Race Team, now in its third year of operation.  Every season, this team attracts new sailors and also has many sailors that were with the team from the beginning.  These young sailors started out in the regular two week sailing school program but with Finley's encouragement and enthusiasm for the team, now spend the spring, fall and entire summer training and racing at numerous regattas.  My son is one of those sailors and Finley was the one that recruited him to the team for its first session back in the fall of 2009.  He, along with many other team members, have gained a lifelong love of sailing because of the junior race team.

- from Terry Fagan
_________________________________________________________________________

The Third Annual "Dance into Fall" evening on November 8th was a heart warming success with some 85 members from various sailing clubs more than ably entertained by the DEMD Classic Rock Band from Alexandra Yacht Club.  Terry Fagan won the "Most Candles On The Cake" Award with David Caruana and Chris Arthurs years behind.

A special award was presented to Yvonne Mellows, ABYC Associate member, by Commodore David Brown of the Blind Sailing Group.  Yvonne is very active as a Skipper assisting Group members in sailing out of their Harbourfront location and was presented the award in recognition of her support and encouragement to Group members to get on board.  The Seeing Eye Dogs in attendance (who wowed us with never a woof) seemed to enjoy the music and apparently they also enjoy the sailing as they stay with their owners on board when they leave dock.
