Electrical Power Outage
________________________________________________________________

If you are planning on coming to ABYC tonight (Wednesday, October 31), be aware that electrical power has been partially out since hurricane Sandy left on Monday.  ABYC Manager Rennie Stobbs said that there isn't enough power to operate the various systems and that Toronto Hydro has us on their to-do list however they cannot say when full power will be restored.

You should call before coming to the club (416-698-4498).  If the telephone rings and no one answers, that will mean the power has not been restored.

You can also call Rennie on his cell phone (416-666-3000) until 5:00p.m.

Changing Seasons
- from Commodore Rick Humphrey
_______________________________________________

As we evolve into the non-sailing season and we are putting our boats to bed, I wish to thank the many members who contributed to all the events that took place throughout the "in-the-water" season.  Your work was exemplary and was appreciated by your Board and the Membership.  We look at a season that displayed pride in the new docks and particularly when we saw them mostly occupied by new boats.  We have seen new members filling our ranks in numbers that we haven't seen for years filling the docks with boats of all sizes.  We welcome all of our new members and hope that you had a season full of sailing.

Two weekends ago, we saw a successful and safe Haulout over the three day period.  Again, our members offered their services and I must congratulate those Club leaders who "jumped into the fray" to lead our members.  The organization and choreography needed to pull off this kind of event safely and efficient truly shows the talent of our leaders and our membership.

Your Board welcomes back two of our incumbent members to their ranks in Paul Brennan, Rear Commodore, Bob Hedley, Vice-Commodore, Marine Services, and we welcome Axel Noriega, our newly-elected Vice-Commodore, Financial Services to that Position of Responsibility.  I, of course, acknowledge the fine work of all our Board Members and thank them for their continued work.

The Board is paying particular attention to the following Club issues:

  1. A continued respect for our volunteers and their work
  2. A continued "All in good repair" strategy for our grounds, buildings, docks, and other assets through our Ten-Year Plan.
  3. The Wet Water Treatment plans from our neighbours to the west.  We have already provided feedback to the City for their current plan.  We have connected with Toronto Water to receive updates directly from them.
  4. The positive report of the Internal Auditors, engaged by and supplied to the Commodore reporting financial and systems analyses that support our current paths and give helpful suggestions for our future
  5. Our new look Corporate Image strategies that will consolidate our logos, letterheads, and promotion.
  6. A new Shorewall replacement plan that will involve our energy and resources through an expected long-range plan
  7. Continued vigilance of the Tax Issue, with the help of the Council of Commodores and the other involved Clubs.
  8. A review of how the Board reacts to member behaviour issues and the extent of its involvement
  9. The concern of adequate lines of communication both from the Board to the Members, Members to the Board, and Member to Member shared in various venues in the Club.
  10. The encouragement of our Members to uphold the newly passed Code of Conduct.
  11. The monitoring of and the assurance of resources to our programs.

We continue to solicit your feedback and I encourage you to contact Board Members, Committee Chairs, and our Club Manager to report issues, to seek feedback or clarification.  If you do not receive an answer immediately, do not assume that we are not interested as we do have other responsibilities, families, jobs that may take our attention at times.  Write us again.  We must be responsive to you and we will.

I welcome you to the new season and encourage you to get involved in the Club.  Events like the Work Parties, Jazz Night, Presentation Nights, the Tree-trimming party, our successful Lecture Series, to name a few, are being presented by your fellow members and I ask that you support all events throughout the winter as you are able.  I invite you to continue to come down to the Club for a meal and a drink and support our excellent Restaurant and Bar.  We have a great staff who exhibit high standards and value your feedback.

Our Club needs your positive outlook on our future and our services.  By supporting them and talking them up as much as you can, we will see continued success.

Respectfully submitted,

Rick Humphrey, Commodore

Saturday will be all sunshine
- from Sue Hamilton, Work Party Co-ordinator
___________________________________________________________________

Pay no attention to the hurricane rolling through our fair city.  Really.  I have it on good authority that Saturday will be all sunshine.  We had a good response to last week's call for help, but there are plenty more jobs still open to choose from.  I know some of you really like to think it over and not rush into anything.  It does really help if you can let me know ahead of time which job you would like to work on, that way we can distribute the workload.  Of course walk-ins are gladly accepted.

Please see the list of jobs below, (I have put in the number of people that have signed up so far for each job), and send an email to [email protected] to let me know which job you would like to work on.  The workparty (on Saturday Nov 3rd) is from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.  Please come up to the clubhouse when you arrive to let me know you are here.

Style Guide
- from Krista Slack, ABYC Vision Planning Chair
___________________________________________

As follow up to the recommendation made in the ABYC Vision Report and the recent announcement at our General Meeting in September, we are pleased to make available the ABYC GRAPHIC STYLE GUIDE and a collection of logos and other artwork that is to be used going forward in any material - both internal and external- that represents the club.  The guide is intended to give all users concise direction in how the ABYC marques are to be used.  I want to thank the entire Marketing Communications Committee that was involved at some stage with this brand evolution [ Carolyn Weckesser, Kate Driscoll, Geoff Huck and the ABYC Board] but mostly a huge thank you goes to Lauren Stephens who has created all of the artwork you will now be using.

To download the Style Guide and any logos you need to work with when preparing communications for the club, please go to the members area of the website.  Lauren or myself are also available should you need any help in the development of your materials.

ABYC gets more social

- from Barbara Jones

________________________________________________

ABYC can now be found on Twitter and LinkedIn.  The Club has been on Facebook for some time, moderated by Past Commodore Carolyn Weckesser.  We have extended our social media footprint to two additional platforms.  Look for our iconic golden Sea Horse!

TWITTER (www.twitter.com/ABYCToronto)

@ABYCToronto is our new Twitter account.  We're following key sailing and boating sources, so our Twitter feed is quite nautical.  If you have suggestions about additional sources we could follow, send them to @ABYCToronto.

How you can use Twitter

TWITTER is great for short, newsy messages and it is available to everyone.  If you are a Committee Chair and have a Twitter Account, send us a Tweet (@ABYCToronto) and we'll follow you.  Your @ABYC Tweets will then show up on our feed.  [ex. "Mark your calendars @ABYCToronto New Member Night planned for April 15th"]  Anyone can send messages (up to 140 characters) to our feed the same way, and we will Retweet them to our followers.  Hashtags can be used to help people find us using Twitter's search function.  [ex. "Excited about #ABYCOpen this weekend.  Planning to kick some butt in the #J105 fleet" or "#CrimeScene rounds mark one leading a 10 boat fleet @ABYCToronto. #HotABYCSailors"]  For those new to Twitter, check out their excellent overview here and an explanation of how to use Hashtags here.   Send your ideas for inventive ways to use Twitter to @ABYCToronto.

LINKEDIN (search 'ABYC' under 'Groups')

LinkedIn is a professionally-oriented social media tool.  Our group is restricted for use by ABYC Members only.  All 2012 ABYC Members with email addresses on file with the Club have been pre-approved as members.  If you use a different email address on LinkedIn you need to request membership (and will be approved).  The LinkedIn Group can evolve into much more than a 'social' tool for our membership.  It can be used to manage cruises and work party projects, post jobs (ABYC and non-ABYC), promote member businesses and services (Business Directory), and ... well, whatever else we dream up.

Committee Chairs interested in creating subgroups should contact Barbara Jones {A subgroup is a space within our ABYC Group where members can collaborate based on a function, project, topic, etc.. Subgroups have many features including Discussions, News, Jobs and Digest Emails, etc. }

Send your feedback on uses for these social media tools to [email protected].

Blue Dock
boardwalk repairs
- from Mike Leroux
______________________________________________

The repairs to approximately 200 feet of decking along Blue Wall will commence at the all-day work party on November 3rd.  Phase one will see the deck boards removed this Saturday.

This will create an extra challenge for those whose vessels are laid up along blue wall.  Please exercise extra care in working on the boats, especially where ladders are used to get on and off at the stern.

We apologize for any inconvenience.

If there are any questions or concerns, please contact Mike Leroux.   [email protected]

So what happens when you wrap a mooring chain around your propeller shaft?  You should hope that it happens when you are at ABYC.  This happened several times on haulout weekend and the solution is quite simple.

In the incident shown in the photo (boat on the right), approximately 45 members, many of them in the middle of their lunch, simply got up and went to the boat in trouble and stood on the foredeck of the boat so that the bow went down and the stern went up high enough to raise the propeller & shaft out of the water.  Then, other members in small boats went to the the stern and unwrapped the chain from the now visible propeller shaft.

This has happened many times over the years but 45 must be a new record!

The previous day, as boats were being hauled by crane, several deep draft boats ran into problems with the depth of the main channel while heading to the crane.  As can be seen in the photo, both were stuck in the main channel making it nearly impossible for other boats to get by.  Eventually with the able assistance of many members and lots of work by the towboat operators, both boats made it to the crane and are now safely in their cradles.

Nice work everyone!

Sunkissed prepared for Sandy
- from John Waller & Nina Schmidt
_____________________________________________________

Hi All.  Thank you all for your best wishes and concerns re hurricane Sandy.  Fortunately Sunkissed has rejected the approaches of this demon without damage or hurt feelings.  We stripped the boat down of headsails, all canvas, dinghy and tied everything down.  We have 11 docklines attached and are in the secure Waterside Marina in Norfolk.  Having done all this,we spent the last two nights in the downtown Marriott overlooking the harbor.

Sandy's "eye" missed us to the north by a hundred miles or so.  Nevertheless, we had 3 days of solid rain and non stop winds, thankfully topping out at about 50 knots.  We understand you have also seen Sandy's impact in Ontario.  The most dangerous aspect was the storm surge topping out at 7 feet including an unusually high tide due to the full moon.  The fixed docks here were underwater and the floating docks we were on were within a foot of coming off their bollards.  It could have been a lot worse for us and unfortunately was for some.

This morning the sky is starting to clear.  Sailing should be an adventure, right?  The importance of preparing  for the worst has been reinforced for us, as well as: if it is going to be bad pick your spot carefully well in advance and if necessary get off the boat.

All the best.  John and Nina
