Successful Haulout
- from Bob Hedley, VC Marine

Another Sailing Season is over with a safe and successful Haulout.

Congratulations and thank you Anthony Mirvish and Bruce Morrison our crane and rail yard coordinators.  Anthony tells me that we hauled 137 boats by crane and with the extra space in the rail yard and trailers we located an extra 16 boats with space for 4 more next year.  Bruce tells me that we hauled 63 boats, cross hauled 4 boats with 3 boats remain in the harbour.  In all, the rail yard will have 70 boats storing at ABYC.  The rail team overcame a setback early in the haulout process on Saturday morning when the cable jumped off the sheave under water.

Anthony and Bruce are part of a larger process that involves many members of ABYC taking on  organizing work.  I want to also acknowledge and thank John Moody who organizes the work teams for the haulout and Alison Booz who organizes the dock people.  Also, I want to thank others involved in organizing and staging the haulout and all of our members who showed up on time and did their job for one or two or three days.  These jobs include operating the winch house, signalling the rail car operation, signalling the cranes, dock and cradle forepersons, cradle placement and wooden cradle construction, boat placement and general hands on the boat.  Did you know that the we had people working for three weeks with staff preparing the yards?

Now we can get our boats ready for six months of storage and focus on maintaining our club through Saturday morning work parties and other key initiatives such as the future of how we'll store boats and maintain the harbour seawalls.

Thank you all!

Crane Haulout 2012
A total of 137 boats were hauled by crane this year, 15 of which were moved by hydraulic trailer.  For a variety of reasons (e.g. concern over water depth or desire to store mast-up), this was fewer boats than the 146 anticipated.  Despite the low water levels - and a seiche in the bay Friday that saw water levels varying by a foot at a time - only two boats got stuck in the channel between the Green B and Red B Visitor's Docks.  A great effort involving Paul MacDonald, Rob Gow and Dan Marcil on the Humphreys and Paul Lefneski and Rick Itenson on the tow boat, with John Moody and others helping from shore, eventually dragged "Sexy Beast" through the obstruction.  It's fair to say that I was at least as relieved as Rory.  The effects of the seiche were such that several other deep draft boats made it through without incident, due only to timing.  Incredibly, the 45 minutes this took did not slow down the operation, as the haul sequence was modified to compensate, the hydraulic trailers were also kept in operation, and other boats were able to proceed through the channel.

The later haulout this year presented a number of challenges and I am aware it was not universally popular.  The principal advantage was that we could haul the hydraulic trailer boats on the same date as the rest of the boats.  However, the date was not chosen for that reason.  It was chosen in consultation with the Sailing Committee based on Thanksgiving falling relatively earlier in October than usual.  This does not represent a permanent change and I expect that going forward we will resume our usual practice of hauling one week after Thanksgiving.

A great deal of planning and organization goes into the haulout operation on both the crane and rail operations.  Ultimately, the success of the haul plan comes down to the efforts and dedication of the large team of people who have to implement it.

I want to particularly thank the following people for their efforts:  John Moody for organizing all the crane crews;

Crane foremen Roy Little and Paul MacDonald; signalmen Terry Fagan, Joe Simpson, Bob Hedley, Bob Wilson and Al Sauder; cradle crew chiefs Neil Payne, Bruce Hannah and Cam Hind; dock foremen Alfie Nonnewitz, Mike Robertson, Paul Brennan (who also did duty as hydraulic trailer foreman on Friday); tractor driver Bernie Caron; equipment managers Claude Michaud and Robert St. Hilaire; Alison Booz for organizing the Dock Ladies and coordinating all boat movements; Rennie and the yard bosuns for all-around support before and during haulout; Emily Sawolak and Dawn Carey for organizing the Boat Riders in Rebecca Crumlish's absence;

and of course all the crews on both cranes. It is a great pleasure and honour to work with all of you.

Have a great winter...only six months to launch.

Crane Committee Chair

A/V SPECIALIST NEEDED

The Sailing Committee is looking for someone to operate the slide presentation for the upcoming ABYC Racing Awards Presentation Night on Saturday November 17, 2012.

We have been fortunate in the past few years to have Arnis Budrevics prepare this slide and video presentation, and he will be again be putting this presentation together, but is unable to attend the Presentation Dinner.

We are looking for someone who may have to arrange for a second projector and screen to run this presentation on a laptop computer, and their ability to get together with Arnis at the beginning of November to review this presentation.

Please respond to either pmcdonald@hoganchev.com, or cell-phone 416-816-0578.

Even though haulout has come and gone, ABYC's Junior Race Team members are still sailing.  The team is hoping to train until Oct. 28, unless it gets too cold.  They train every Sunday from noon to 4 pm.  One coach and a couple of the sailors are missing from this photo but altogether there are 11 sailors in the fall program.  Most of the fall sailors are part of ABYC's green fleet, which is the beginner fleet.

THE DEMD CLASSIC ROCK GROUP RETURNS

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2012 AT 7:30

A Fall Tradition continues with the return to ABYC for the third year of the Alexandra Yacht Club musicians group known as the "DEMD".

Each year we invite members of area yacht clubs with club houses closed for the winter to join us at ABYC for a warm mid-fall evening of Chef Paul's pasta dinner special and DEMD's special interpretations of our favorite classic rock tunes.  We sail to or race at many of the invited Clubs so please join us as we reciprocate their hospitality.

Come on down, pack on some carbs and then dance them away to some solid music from the past.
