Water Depth
Soundings taken last Friday and Saturday indicate 7-10 feet off White Dock, 6-7 at the north end of the area between Green and Blue, and maximum of 5 feet at the Cut (shoaling to around 3.5 feet at the end closest to the dinghy docks).  Depths in the dredged channel at Coatsworth Cut are deeper (9 feet off the drysail area and 5 feet off the gas dock).

First boats to be hauled on Friday & Saturday
Please have your boats at the rafts/docks ready for haul by the time of the first haul; second boat either close astern or also tied up (this will be more practical on Blue Wall than on White on Friday; at the Coatsworth Cut on Saturday, we could have three boats ready if possible).

Harbourmaster Notice
- From Paul Lefneski, Harbourmaster
_________________________________________________

This is to remind the owners with boats in slips from 1 to 8 on the white wall, from 2 to 32 on the blue wall and slips 1 to 11 on the green dock that your boat needs to be cleared for haul out so that it will not interfere with the crane operations.

Could you please have your boat moved by this coming Thursday.  There should be enough empty slips in the harbour for everyone.  I would suggest to not use the visitor slips unless there are no other appropriate size slips for your boat because there is a lot of traffic in the harbour over the weekend and it makes it a bit tight if there are boats on the visitor slips narrowing the channel.

Thanks

Tallow Crew Opportunity
- from Nancy Wilson
__________________________________________________

The summer has gone way too fast and I can't believe it's haul-out time again.  Haul-out is the busiest time for the Tallow crew, so we could really use a couple of extra hands.  No experience is necessary, we can show you what to do.  It's recommended that you wear old clothes and particularly, old shoes.  You'll have a fun time and get to hang around with a great bunch of gals.

Please contact Nancy Wilson via email at ndwilson19@gmail.com or telephone 416-219-0519  if you'd like to help out.

Thanks,
Nancy
Rail Yard Notice
- from Bruce Morrison

I need a team of 3 people to finish the rebuild of way 7 in the east yard so it can accommodate larger boats and to add a storage location for the emergency cradle.  The weekend of Oct 13 all the people that setup ways 2, 4, 12 and 14 in the west yard did a GREAT job. Thank you.

Finally, I have completed the inspections of the wooden cradles.  A number need repairs before they are fit for use. In general everyone should inspect their own cradle to ensure the bolts are tight and it is in top condition for the coming storage season.  Also, please look at your cradle and make sure it is properly marked with your name, member number and boat name.  If there are inaccurate markings on the cradle please paint over them.

Safety Committee
_______________________________________________

As we approach haulout, the Safety Committee would like to mention a few items.

When you move your boat for haulout, if you do not have someone to go with you, ask for a boat rider.  It makes it safer for all.

Everyone should wear the appropriate safety gear for there job.  For the crane area that would be hardhats, safety shoes and work gloves.  For the rail-yard, work gloves should be worn and if you have safety shoes wear them too. People working on the water should not only have PFDs in the boat but wear them.  In the crane area, there will hardhats available for boat owners to wear when their boat is being hauled out.

Please clear your side decks and fasten any booms or poles securely on the cabin top. Also remove any loose items from the deck.  We will be checking the decks the week before haul-out and calling people with our concerns

Make sure your cradle is ready for haul-out.  Cradles in the rail yard needing repair are marked.  Please check your cradle for problems and fix them before haul-out.  In the crane area make sure your cradle is assembled and pads attached.  This will prevent delays in hauling your boat out and make the day go safely and smoothly.

If you are not on a crew or your boat is not being hauled out, please keep clear of the work areas.  On Friday watch yourself in the parking lot as boats will be moved on trailers.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL!  Be aware of your surrounding and the hazards in it.  If you see a hazard, let others know as well as the safety officers (we will be wearing safety vest).  Let's make this a safe Haulout.

Thank You

ABYC Safety Committee

You'll just have to wait...

We know that everyone is anxiously waiting to see what Sue Hamilton has dreamed up for us to do on November 3 - the all day work party.  Unfortunately because you were so busy filling up S2S with all your important notices and articles, we had to ask Sue to keep everyone waiting for a little while longer.  Yes, we know that it means more sleepless nights for many of you but please, just relax and be patient.  This gives Sue an extra week to fine-tune her list of to-dos and come up with even more stuff for everyone.

Last Chance for Award Nominations

- from Rear Commodore Paul Brennan

________________________________________________________________________

Nominations for all awards close this weekend at 2359h on Sunday.

We have a lot of very dedicated members at ABYC who go above and beyond the call of duty.  It is crucial that we take the time to recognize this kind of leadership behaviour, as we all try to maintain and continually improve our club.

Please take time to consider if one of your fellow members (of any category!) should be nominated for one of these very important awards:

Contribution Awards:

Al Clinker Memorial - for the unsung hero, always cheerfully helping out for the benefit of ABYC and fellow members.

Alice Patterson memorial - for services to boat racing.

Cradle Crew Award - for meritorious service by a member of the cradle crew.

Hartley Trophy - to the family that contributes the most to club activities.

Leo Cotey Trophy - for the woman who has contributed most to ABYC during the year.

Don Davis Trophy - for the Dinghy sailor who contributes most to ABYC, in cruising, racing, or club improvement.

Otto Van Dam Shorewall Trophy - for volunteer services rendered to the club.

Roly McKillop Award - for volunteer services rendered to the club.

Stacy Trophy - to the member who makes the greatest contribution to developing a lifelong love of sailing in young sailors.

Special Awards:

Commodore's Award - for best representation of ABYC in any branch of yachting, inside or outside the Club.

Keen Crew Award - to the person who has demonstrated, as crew, outstanding dedication or performance.

Michael Stuart Trophy - for the most outstanding act of sportsmanship.

A short statement of the contributions and why you feel the award is deserved is all that is required.

You can send nominations or racing results to rearcom@abyc.on.ca, or drop them in to the office, and I'll ensure that they are forwarded to the appropriate parties for consideration.

ABYC Planning Update
- from Phil Giddings, VC Planning
______________________________________________________

Seawalls

At the September General meeting I presented an update on the ongoing planning of the ABYC seawall remediation project.  For those members who have not been attending the General Meetings in the past year, you may not be aware that after six years of undertaking seawall repairs each winter, it has become evident that we will need to undertake some form of longer term solution as the seawalls continue to degrade.

An independent engineering firm was hired to provide an assessment and recommendations and we received their final report this summer.  They concur that the walls require replacement and they presented various options with costing.  We have set up a technical steering committee (Joe Simpson, Bob Hedley, Stephen Trevitt, Anthony Mirvish, Don Sturgeon and myself) to help develop a plan for this rather large long term project.  A financing committee (Giles Osbourne, Mark Powell) is about to get started.

For more information on this project please go to the ABYC member areas under a heading called "2012 Planning - Walls" where I have placed several documents pertaining to this initiative.  You may wish to start by reading my summary report called Giddings - Seawall Report.

Ashbridge's Bay Treatment Plant Landform Study

A primary concern for our club is the water quality in our area and the impact of our immediate neighbour, the Ashbridge's Bay Treatment Plant (ABTP).   One of impacts that this plant has on the surroundings occurs during heavy rainfall when storm water can become mixed with sewage and be routed into Coatsworth Cut without proper water treatment.  A solution to this known issue has been under investigation for many years and the current proposal for a specialized treatment area looks like  this:

This project is currently in the early planning stage and a full report can be found at:

http://www.toronto.ca/legdocs/mmis/2012/pw/bgrd/backgroundfile-45684.pdf

Our planning goal is to make sure that these changes are an opportunity and are designed and configured in the best way possible for the continued and improved success of our club.

As key stakeholders in the success of this project it is important we have a voice at the planning table and our concerns are presented in an informed, clear and objective fashion.  If you would like to be well versed on this topic, I have posted a great deal of material in the members area under the heading "2012 Planning - ABTB".

 Member Contribution Committee
- Update
- from Jamie Donaldson, Coordinator
_________________________________________________________________________

Hi everyone!  By the time you may be reading this, I will be more-or-less on my way to France and Germany for 10 days.  I will be thinking of the Club over the weekend (really!) - I will miss the fun of Haulout for my first time as a member.  Good Luck to all, and have a safe time!

I have some reports to give from our committee:

1) "Blue card" work reporting.

We have compiled the hours reported on blue cards through Oct 12.  I have posted the list in the signal room, listed by member number.  I have corrected all the wrong names/numbers which have been passed on to me as best as I could - please let me know of any more omissions/errors!

A total of over 7,600 hours has been reported on the cards - I know that this is still shy of the total amount of time we have collectively contributed.  Please remember that unless you report your contribution hours, they will not get recorded.  May I also ask again for those who have completed their 20 hour commitment, and those that do not have this requirement, to report their contributions as well - it is important to have a good record of the real amount of work we do in the Club!

2) "Yellow card" Haulout survey.

We will again be conducting a survey to provide insight and information to the Board regarding the real amount of time spent (and by what member categories) during Haulout. We will use the same yellow cards as for Launch - pleas try to find one and fill it in so we can provide advice regarding your real contributions to the Club.

3) Moving forward.

We are working on moving from the 20th Century (where we all fill in cards and a human reads them and enters data into a spreadsheet) into the 21st, where we hope to implement an interactive "job-jar" which will at a minimum: (a) allow job leaders to advertise available / required positions; (b) allow members to search for suitable contributions to make up their required time; (c) allow members to record their contributions and see where they stand with regard to their hours.  This dream is still being developed (and will require some funding), so please let me know what you think.

See you in early November, at the work-party!

The ABYC Finance Committee will shortly convene its first meeting since the election of Axel Noriega to the role of VC Finance, and we are recruiting members with a finance background or an interest in finance.  It's a great way to get an understanding of the financial aspects of club operations, both present and future.  The committee assists with financial planning and budgeting for the Club, and works on other finance related projects.

Interested parties please contact Jeff Dejean at jeff.dejean@rogers.com.

Sincerely,

So how much water is left?
________________________________________________________

The seasonal water level drop is in full force as anyone with a boat can attest to.   Although the water is very low this year, it is nowhere near the record low set in 1935 -  nearly 2 feet lower than it is today.  Hopefully the lake level will not drop much more, if at all during the next couple of days.

Looking forward to...
