June is Tahoe Bike Month
June is Tahoe Bike Month and it kicks off this Saturday, June 1, as Tahoe Bike Day, and the beginning of the 8th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge (June 1-14), followed on Sunday, June 2, with the 22nd annual America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride (AMBBR). Thousands of bicyclists are arriving here for these annual events and extra caution and hospitality are needed to welcome our visiting cyclists from across the United States.
AMBBR is the largest and most important fundraising event, nationally, for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. Nearly 2,000 riders are here, each having had to raise at least $4,000 to participate. Each year, millions of dollars are raise to help find a cure for these diseases.
There are many bike events during June and we'll try to let you know about them in our Calendar of Events located at www.Tahoebike.org. One event this month is the Alta Alpina Challenge, on June 29. You can check that out at www.Altaalpina.org.
The New Tahoe Bike Challenge
June 1 - 14, 2013
The 8th annual Tahoe Bike Challenge begins this Saturday, June 1 and concludes on Friday, June 14 with the Challenge Wrap-up Party.
This year we transformed the event to be more fun (events and party), social (sharing photos, lunch meet-ups, photo contest) and impactful (helping produce personal, environmental and economic health benefits ). You can even earn Green Pins for accomplishing specific milestones - like being a Centurion for riding 100 miles and preventing 190 pounds of C02 from being emitted into the atmosphere. Did you know that for every mile you ride your bike, you are preventing 1.9 pounds of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the atmosphere. How cool is that? Last year, we prevented nearly 12 tons of C02, and this year our goal is 20 tons or 44,000 pounds.
Sign up now, at www.TahoeBikeChallenge.org and be a part of this historical accomplishment while we are having fun, being with friends, sharing photos and doing good for the Lake and our community.

Barton Health Leads the Way
Barton Health's Leadership Development Team volunteered their time to contribute to the 2nd annual Bike Path Clean-up Day on May 30. The team of 21 Barton directors, managers, and supervisors got together to help clean up the bike trail of garbage, pinecones, glass and other debris. Barton's team wanted to contribute their time to a community project that supported the health and well-being of the community members in South Lake Tahoe. The group had a lot of fun and is looking forward to other similar projects in Lake Tahoe in the future.
Kudos go to Barton Health for leading the way in community stewardship. The bicycle community is hopeful other community organizations and businesses will take Barton's lead and help out in the future. Thanks go out to Sierra Nevada Alliance and its sponsors for championing this important annual event leading up to Tahoe's cycling season.

Bicyclist Cone Zone Caution and Safety Needed
Tahoe roads in California continue to be under construction to install new storm water drainage and filtration systems for improving Lake Tahoe water quality, and in some locations; lighted sidewalks, curbs, gutters and landscaping are being installed, utility poles and signals are being relocated, power lines are being rewired, and bicycle lanes are being built - all great improvements to enhance our community life.
However, during this comprehensive construction period, lasting the next couple years, heightened safety awareness and caution is needed among motorists, pedestrians, and bicyclists near the construction areas.
The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) would like bicyclists to follow these safety measures near the Cone Zone:
Do not ride inside the cone zone pattern, which is the contractor work zone, whether you see the contractor working there or not. There may be hazards in the cone pattern that are not readily apparent to the cyclist, such as drop-offs, trenches, excavations, ground out rough surfaces, tack coats put down prior to paving, hot asphalt surfacing, or moving equipment, materials or personnel.
Avoiding the cone zone may move you into a narrowed lane with motorized vehicles. If you are uncomfortable riding there, you may want to find an alternate route on city streets or county roads to bypass the cone zone.
When riding in a traffic lane near workers in the cone zone, it is advised that you announce yourself by saying something like "Bike here" so the construction workers know your presence and can be more cautious with their tools, equipment, and actions.
If you are involved in an accident in the work zone, the authorities may find you in violation of provisions of the California Vehicle Code for entering a contractor work area.
Be Alert! Be Smart! Stay Safe! Have Fun!
