BikeChalnge13 The New Tahoe Bike Challenge

June 1 - 14, 2013

The Tahoe Bike Challenge is back! With new energy and fun activities to get everyone on their bikes to work, school, or play. This year the Bike Challenge has a theme of Having Fun, Being Social and Making an Impact.

Here are some of the details to get your stoke on, sign up, and get ready to ride......

Having Fun

Green Achievement Pins

New to the Challenge this year is participants can earn digital Green Pins for attaining specific milestones.  Each milestone correlates to a personal achievement that can include riding a bicycle for the very first time to preventing over 1,000 pounds of C02 from being emitted into the atmosphere.  For example, traveling five (5) miles on a bike will earn the High Five pin, and participating on Bike Path Clean-Up Day will also earn the Trail Crew Pin.  There are nearly 20 pins that can be earned during the Challenge.  When a milestone is reached, the Green Pin is sent to the participant having earned the pin, and they can share it on their Facebook page with family and friends.

How many Green Pins have you earned?

Challenge Photo Contest

To ramp up the fun and excitement for the Bike Challenge, bicyclists can enter the Challenge Photo Contest and have a chance to win a GoPro video camera and other prizes.  The Contest theme is Why Bike the Challenge? To enter the Contest, participants go to Facebook.com/TahoeBikeChallenge page.  There they can enter the contest by liking the page and then upload their photos.  Photos with the most votes (Likes) are the winners of the contest.

Make an Impact

Green Miles Calculated

Now, Challenge participants' recorded bike miles will be converted into Green Miles.  A Green Mile is a mile ridden on a bicycle that prevents 1.9 pounds of carbon dioxide (C02) from being emitted into the atmosphere.  For example, 100 Green Miles prevents 190 pounds of C02.  Each participant will have their Green Miles calculated daily and the total combined Green Miles of all participants will also be displayed.  The total Green Mile goal for the 2013 Bike Challenge is to prevent twenty (20) tons of C02 from being emitted into the atmosphere.  The total amount of C02 not being emitted during the 2012 Bike Challenge was nearly 12,000 tons or 26,378.384 pounds.

Calories Burned

Challenge participants will now see on their profile how riding their bike can make a personal impact on their health and well being by their daily calorie burned calculations.  The amount of calories being burned can vary depending on the amount of riding time, one's speed, and the exertion level like climbing uphill.  The calculation being used for the Challenge is 43 calories burned per mile. For more personalized and specific calculations, you can refer to www.bicycling.com/caloriemain.

Gasoline Savings

And, our intelligent system will even convert your Green Miles into gasoline savings.
