Greetings!
Representing local business interests, the Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce strongly supported an amendment to the Town Code (Section 29.10.145 of Chapter 29) that will allow businesses to charge for valet parking utilizing private parking lots. The Chamber, in conjunction with some of our member businesses, approached the Town with interest in operating valet parking services for a charge within private lots because the current Town Code only allowed for valet service to be offered free of charge. Tuesday evening, the Los Gatos Town Council voted 4-1 in favor of allowing businesses including restaurants to use private parking lots that in the past have been left empty in the evening hours.
For decades, Los Gatos has been working on ways to increase parking space inventory throughout Downtown to allow customers to park more easily when shopping, dining, and participating in the many serviced offered here. This amendment permits a cost effective and quick solution to provide more parking opportunities for customers. The Chamber agrees with the Town that valet parking is an effective way to park more cars within the same amount of parking lot space.
Please note that the policy language requested and second reading of the ordinance amendment are currently scheduled for the 11/17 consent calendar for Council's consideration and approval. Following that, if approved, the ordinance will take effect 30 days later. So, if approved on 11/17, it will be legal for a business to offer paid valet service beginning 12/17. The Chamber hopes that this change will help relieve traffic congestion and the difficulty of finding a parking space in Los Gatos.
