May 21 - 3:30 pm, Forbes Mill Footbridge Mural Installation Celebration. Murals painted by Los Gatos youth that reflect the history and character of Los Gatos will be celebrated on the Forbes Mill Footbridge at the west end closest to Old Town. The Forbes Mill Footbridge Mural project was formed in 1994, with 156 panels painted between 1996 and 1998. Refurbishment of the panels began in 2002, in order to replace panels that became chipped, cracked or were vandalized over the ensuing years.
In 2010, the Arts and Culture Commission launched a plan to replace the panels. Many of the panels were in poor condition due to graffiti and effects of time and weather. In addition, the Commission wanted to provide the opportunity for other Los Gatos children to experience the thrill of having their artwork featured on the bridge. With the approval of the Town Council, the Commission worked with Los Gatos Saratoga Recreation to offer this opportunity to youth enrolled in the LGS Recreation Summer 2014 Art Workshop.
Thirteen children produced artwork in June 2014 that was then captured digitally and transferred to vinyl panels. These thirteen panels represent the third phase of the mural installation project, with the fourth phase set to be created in the summer 2015 LGS Recreation Art Workshop.
The Arts and Culture Commission will be joined by members of the Town Council, Los Gatos Saratoga Recreation, Town Staff and some of the participating youth and their families at the 3:30 p.m. celebration of this new artwork on the Forbes Mill Footbridge at the west end closest to Old Town.
