Wilderness

"A voice crying in the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord." This traditional advent text resonates strongly with feelings today. We see a lot of wilderness today, hear a lot of crying, and feel the need for a way out.

With mass shootings becoming daily routine - we pray very much for the victims in San Bernardino, CA, with religious terrorism becoming daily routine, with our planet crying for help for eco-health, there are immense cries shouting globally. Cries of pain and desperation, cries of insanity and lost balance.

In this wilderness there is such a need to find a way out. Clearly, there is no denial or nuclear destruction that might erase the issues. But we sense a level of desperation because the issues are volatile, toxic, and often the result of complex factors at play.

If "the voice crying in the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord", can help us somehow, it is the experience of centuries that the wilderness should not be avoided. Rather, exactly in the wilderness of our humanity is the need to hear
the voice of hope: prepare;
the voice of liberation: there is a way;
the voice of compassion: there is someone for you, the Lord!

Let us prepare the way of the Lord, in whatever wilderness we encounter. For this we pray.

Christmas Pageant Coffee Hour
Right after the Pageant
December 13 10AM Combined Service

The coffee hour after the Christmas pageant is traditionally a family celebration.
If able, please bring a plate of treats (finger sandwiches, cookies, fruit, bagels, cheese and crackers, etc.) to share at the reception after the pageant.

CHRISTMAS GIVING

Christmas Offering & Memorial Envelopes
This year, our traditional Christmas Offering and Memorial envelopes have been included in the new Christmas Flyer just recently mailed out.  Please return any Memorials to the office by Wednesday, December 16th to ensure time for names to be included in the Christmas Bulletins.   If for some reason you did not receive the mailing this week, envelopes will also be available in the entrance of the church, or contact Sherrill at [email protected] or (203)776-2606.

Giving Tree
Trinity's Giving Tree is starting again starting this week- take an ornament from the tree which will detail the gender and age of the gift- and return to the church with the age appropriate gift! The Giving Tree will be used until December 20th and any questions may be directed to Debby Kraemer (203) 915-3702.

Christmas Toy Drive
Please bring extra toys to donate to the children at Cornell Scott Hill Health Center, here in New Haven. Dr. Bob Windom will bring them to the children. Thank you very much.

Chapel on the Green Christmas Gifts
As many years before we prepare Christmas care gifts of packages wrapped as Christmas gifts that include gloves, hats, socks, candy, toiletries, hand warmers, chocolates, $5 gift cards that enable the recipient to sit in a coffee or sandwich shop when especially cold, LED pocket flashlights for comfort and safety in the dark of night, bandaids & first aid kits, nail clippers & files. No mouthwash (someone has to check the toiletries) because it contains alcohol. Preferably no nuts in the candy because of the dental problems of a large number of the recipients (The same reason we don't distribute apples).
These presents can be given upwrapped or can be assembled into gift bags. About 5 presents per bag not including Christmas candy is optimal.

Simply bring your gifts to the church.
Thank you for your warmth and giving spirit in the Christmas season.

Holiday Bazaar Party

Let us all celebrate!!! We did it! The bazaar was absolutely beautiful and a grand success.  Together we raised over $34,000 and climbing pending the Silent Auction pickups and any unpredicted expenses. Trinity's Holiday Bazaar has officially passed over the $500,000 mark.
The Holiday Bazaar Thank You party is tomorrow Sunday,  December 6 from 2 until 4pm  at the home of Luk and Tiffany. Bring your favorite appetizer and some beverage to share. It is time for us to thank each other and celebrate.

Advent Series: No Place in the Inn? December 6

Our 2015 Advent series will start with a conversation led by our care ministry team leaders, Jack Tebes and Charles Lemert. Together with other team members they have been working hard to develop further our Trinity welcome tradition in combination with a ministry of companionship for people who are in transition, are struggling to find housing, or go through a tough time in life.

On Sunday November 29, Charles Lemert will open the series with a sermon on this theme.

Come and join us at our 10am Sunday Forum to learn more about our upcoming program on Sunday November 29 and Sunday December 6.

A Child's Christmas in Wales: December 12
Please join us for a Holiday Supper, wine and mulled cider, followed by a concert reading of Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales" Caroling, coffee and dessert. Children are welcome! It is on Saturday, December 12 from 5-7:30pm.
A Child's Christmas in Wales is Dylan Thomas' beautiful lyrical prose poem of Christmas past that takes place in his memory. It is a place where it is always snowing at Christmas, where wise cats hide while foolish ones line up on a back-garden wall, just yards from boys with snowballs in their sock-covered hands. It is a place where there are always uncles at Christmas, the same uncles eating until they nearly burst their buttons and then sleep, blowing away like dolphins. A place where there are always mothers, aunts and sisters scuttling to and fro, bearing tureens. It is the sort of poem that once heard becomes part of your memory, calling up a small town in Wales down by the two-tongued sea.

Trinity Players will present this short work "Concert Style" in the Undercroft, as our contribution to the Holiday Spirit in New Haven, one cold Atlantic coastal port reaching across a half a century and a wide ocean. Call or email the Parish Office for reservations so we know how many to expect (203) 624-3101 or [email protected]. There will be a Freewill Offering (suggested donation is $20 to cover food and beverage costs but all are welcome)
Advent by Candlelight:  December 15
For the Women of Trinity

This year we are inviting all of the women of Trinity Church to a sacred candlelit dinner, on Tuesday December 15, 6:30-9pm, to honor all of the long hours and effort put forth by the women of Trinity Church. Dinner will be served in the undercroft, followed by a sacred prayer service. For more information, please contact the church office at (203) 624-3101 or [email protected] or Rowena .

Christmas Concert: December 18
The Trinity Choirs of Men and Boys and Men and Girls will lead in an outstanding display of youthful choral singing in the spirit of the holidays. Please join us for this annual event on Friday, December 18, at 7:30pm, perfect for children and adults alike.

Commemorative Flowers
It has been a long tradition at Trinity for individuals or groups to request flowers on the altars that commemorate, honor, or celebrate a special person or event. And our Trinity Altar Guild orders, arranges, and coordinates flowers for all altars. The contribution for commemorative flowers is $35. Color preference will be honored if available through our vendor. There may be more than one request on a Sunday. When this occurs, the first person scheduled, is the one whose choice is followed. For requests and payments please email Erika Lindgren at our parish office or call her at 203 624-3101.
Youth Group - next event

Kids in grades 6-12 are encouraged to join Trinity's youth group, with their second outing this Sunday afternoon! Winter on the Green
Thanks to those who were able to care for the winter needs of our unhoused neighbors on the Green. Those who received blankets were absolutely thrilled and very grateful. Last Sunday there were just shy of 200 people at Trinity's worship and meal service at 2 pm. Many are still in need as the weather grows colder. Please, if you have unused blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing (including coats and sweaters, gloves, even thick winter trousers) consider bringing them to Church on Sunday. You may give them to James Earl Thomas who is always in the parking lot, Marge Eichler, Charles Lemert, or simply leave them in the Sexton's Offices. They will be collected, stored, and distributed on Sunday afternoon. The need is great. If you have concerns or questions contact Charles Lemert at [email protected] .
