Stewardship Update

This Sunday's Gospel message about the widow's mite brings us back to the meaning of giving. The story shows the stark contrast between the scribes and the widow, but the message is clear: money is an expression of our spirit's disposition. Attachment to prestige, status, or power can make people into money hoarders. The poor widow, however, with barely anything to share, knew how to give, with an open and dedicated heart.

At Trinity we are so grateful for the openness of heart and generosity in giving this year. With 117 pledging units we have already reached 67% of this year's 500K stewardship goal. Thank you very much. Your support is crucial for our mission.
We still need $164,000 to reach our goal and hope that while you are still praying and discerning about your pledge, you will join these expression of confidence and faith in the future of Trinity and the strength of the mission we all carry out in our community, our city, and beyond.

With gratitude, Luk
Holiday from Hell
There is always drama at Trinity!
Our Trinity Players will present a liturgical drama on November 8 as part of our 7:45, 9 and 11 am services.Inspired by CS Lewis' THE GREAT DIVORCE, "HOLIDAY FROM HELL" by Neil Olsen is a delightful, thoughtful, short drama showing what happens when the folks from Hell are able to take a bus trip to Heaven.  All aboard!  The cast and crew will include: Rich Lamere, Warner Marshall, Neil Olsen, Anna Foster, Jeanne Kerr, Laura Lindgren, Gary Lindgren, Doris Manseau, Walden Moore, Jennifer Harned, Liesl Spitz, David Rivera, Anna Zhao, Ruth Risberg and is directed by Minister of Drama, Bob Sandine.  This will be a wonderful Sunday to invite family and friends to join you for worship and drama. Children are welcome.
Taiz Service This Sunday

With 4pm Introduction to Prayer
The meditative Taiz prayer tradition often prompts question about prayer. What is prayer and how does it work? To learn more about prayer, about connecting with God and our soul, come and join this 4pm Introduction to Prayer session in the church, right before the Taiz service.

Mark and Luz Colville Retiring
Join the farewell celebration on Sunday November 15, 2pm

After five years of dedicated ministry as coordinators of Trinity's Chapel on the Green, Mark and Luz decided to step down. Their own Amistad Catholic Worker ministry here in New Haven is requiring more of their attention, especially now that they started a new shelter project.

It is with pain in our hearts that we will say goodbye but we certainly will celebrate their amazing ministry and loving friendship, their pastoral presence and loyal service on Sunday November 15 at 2pm during the Chapel on the Green service. It has been an honor to collaborate with them, often far beyond the confines of Chapel on the Green.
Mark and Luz will stay in their position until the end of the year or leave earlier, if a new coordinator is ready to take over.

We are organizing a purse for Mark and Luz. Their new shelter project has an outstanding $5000 budget need. All donations are welcome; simply send them to our parish office.

Mark and Luz, we will miss you greatly, your prophetic presence and your loving care, your tender listening and your alter attention for the needs of people living in the streets. We are glad that you will continue to collaborate with Chapel on the Green and we thank God for all you have given to this ministry at Trinity. God Bless!

The Children's Christmas Pageant is December 13th, 2015. If you are interested in volunteering with costumes, snacks, or supervision, please add your name to the google doc HERE. This will ensure we have enough volunteers for December 12th and the 13th. If there are any questions please contact Julia Johnson. Thank you!
Holiday Bazaar
Holiday Bazaar November 19 - 22. The steps are crumbling. Two windows are still in need of repair.  The Holiday Bazaar is crucial to this restoration effort.  This event belongs to the people of Trinity. We welcome everyone, especially new folks, to find some piece that they can own, contribute to, or help.  The Holiday Bazaar schedule is on line. http://trinitynewhaven.org/holiday-bazaar/  Sign-up sheets, schedules flyers and contact info are posted in the front entrance. Volunteers are crucial to the success of the Holiday Bazaar. Please see: Mary Ann Stroup [email protected] or Jenny Briggs at [email protected]
Call for Vestry Nominations
For the Period January 2016 - December 2018
The election of a vestry is at the heart of a church community because vestry members serve as parish leaders. In the language of the Episcopal Church, the clergy is responsible for "things spiritual," such as worship, education, and pastoral care, but the vestry has authority over parish fiscal affairs and provides spiritual leadership to ensure that the church remains effective in its mission and ministry. We invite Trinity members to nominate parishioners, including themselves, to serve as a new class of vestry members for a 3-year term starting January 2016

All nominated persons must be:
  • A member of the parish in regular attendance in the year preceding election;
  • 18 years of age or older and a baptized Christian; and,
  • A pledging or financial contributing member of the parish at any level.

Persons elected to the vestry are expected to fulfil the following duties:
  • Attend vestry meetings, which are usually scheduled 5:30 - 7:00 pm on the third Monday of each month in the parish undercroft, as well as occasional special meetings;
  • Attend the annual vestry retreat, which is usually scheduled for Friday evening through Saturday afternoon sometime in February; and,
  • Participate as an active member in at least two committees or ministries of the parish.
If you attend Trinity and care about its mission and ministry, please consider nominating yourself for the vestry. Often parishioners do not think of themselves as a parish leader until invited to serve on the vestry, so if you are invited to be nominated, please consider saying "yes."  We often don't feel called to God's ministry until we listen to that call. Your invitation to the vestry by another parishioner or through that still small voice inside you may be just that call.  It is also an opportunity to grow closer to God's word and to those with whom you will serve.  The vestry is a place for everyone; younger or older, long time members or new parishioners, for as Paul tells us: "We are all one in Christ Jesus."  We hope you consider listening for God's call to run for Vestry.

If you wish to be nominated or if you would like to nominate another parishioner, please send the name of the nominee along with the reason for the nomination to Jack Tebes, Chair, Nominating Committee at: [email protected]. You may also mail this information to: Nominating Committee, Trinity Church Office, 950 Chapel St., 2nd Floor, New Haven, CT 06510, Attn.: Jack Tebes, Senior Warden.

Please submit your nominations as soon as possible so that they may be reviewed by the Nominating Committee who will then contact all nominees to confirm their willingness to serve and to answer any questions.  The deadline for nominations is Sunday, November 29, 2015.

Helping Older People Remain Independent

Dear Friends of IVC,

A big thank you to donors and volunteers.  You do make a difference.

Winter on the Green
Thanks to those who were able to care for the winter needs of our unhoused neighbors on the Green. Those who received blankets were absolutely thrilled and very grateful. Last Sunday there were just shy of 200 people at Trinity's worship and meal service at 2 pm. Many are still in need as the weather grows colder. Please, if you have unused blankets, sleeping bags, and warm clothing (including coats and sweaters, gloves, even thick winter trousers) consider bringing them to Church on Sunday. You may give them to James Earl Thomas who is always in the parking lot, Marge Eichler, Charles Lemert, or simply leave them in the Sexton's Offices. They will be collected, stored, and distributed on Sunday afternoon. The need is great. If you have concerns or questions contact Charles Lemert at [email protected] .
