 Eldering

A few months back, I began my day with an amazing meditation on Eldering from the Center for Action and Contemplation by Richard Rohr.1  He reminded me that we live in a society with elderly people but unfortunately very few elders.  He emphasized that "it's not because they (the elderly) are bad people but there haven't been guides from the first half to the second half of life, so most of us stay innocently in the first half."2  I have been fortunate because for my entire life, I have had elders (whether familial like my great-grandmother Ella and her sister, my Aunt Tina or my maternal grandmother, Ida and her sister, my Aunt Maude, or the members of the Sisters of Charity of New York like Sr. Margaret McEntee, Sr. Andrea Dixon, and Sr. Anne-Denise Brennan to name a few) who have accompanied me and guided my path when I have stopped to listen.  So for those who do make it to that second half transformation, what a blessing they are to us if we only we reach out, listen and learn from them.

In my short time here at Trinity, I have discovered that we are blessed with many elders.  At this time of renewal, I wonder what we could learn as a community from the elders still among us - those people who as Rohr describes, "no longer need to be mirrored themselves but can grant their attention and awareness to other people.  Those people who listen and see us at a deeper level."3  I invite you to join me in partnering with our Trinity Home Board and the Trinity Buddy System to spend some time with the elders in our community as we continue to search for, understand and know God.   Our elders like Old Turtle4 have much to share.  Ask the young men from the Boys Choir who caroled at Elim Park a few weeks ago.

African American Read-InHelp us celebrate the Twenty-fifth National African American Read-In, Sunday, February 1, 2015, immediately following the 9:00 A.M. service.

Here at Trinity, this will be our twelfth year to participate. Choose any short piece of literature or an excerpt from a longer text written by an African American author. Select from any genre that is of interest to you: poetry, fiction (novels, short stories, and other narratives), non-fiction (including speeches, biography, autobiography, history, and others).  Those of you who have read previously, please read again, and this year, why not invite a relative, friend, classmate, colleague, or a member of another church to join you.  The Read-In is open to the community. Anthologies of African American literature will be available in the library in the undercroft, and Linda Sheehan will have a book for children. Also, search online and in your school and town libraries. Individual readings may extend to but not exceed 5 minutes.  Drama and other groups are invited to read for a maximum of 10 minutes.

Email any questions and the author and title of your reading(s) to Eleanor Q. Tignor ([email protected]).  Deadline: January 27, 2015.
Trinity Vestry Installation: Class of 2018

Music Fundraising: Put Your Money Where Your Music Is

Trinity's long term financial stability urgently requires that the parish find new ways to raise money and control costs - without raising new funding the Music program will face budget cuts to reduce its cost. Our goal is to raise at least $50,000 each year for the next three years. The money raised will support the music portion of our budget and create an endowment that will ensure the continuation of our music program for many years to come. The first phase of this effort is an appeal to parishioners to give one-time gifts, or pledges to be paid throughout 2015, dedicated to music. In the very near future, the music committee will be sponsoring fundraising events, such as concerts, and launching an appeal to alumni, former choir families and others in the greater New Haven area who love Trinity's music. While the challenges we face may be difficult, they are not insurmountable. Together we can work to ensure a bright future for Trinity's music program.

Thanks to the generosity of members of the parish, we have already raised almost $20,000 in pledges and donations toward our $50,000 goal for 2015. Please join our efforts by considering a pledge or one-time donation. Checks may be mailed to the parish office or placed in the collection plate; please put "Music" in the notation. If you have questions, comments, suggestions or want to help with future fundraising efforts, please contact Barb Hedberg at [email protected]. We thank you for your ongoing support.

New Parish Secretary: Ms. Beverly Sastri

We are excited to welcome Ms. Beverly Sastri as our new parish secretary. Beverly will work on bulletins, online publications, and communication. You can contact Beverly through the parish telephone number, by email: [email protected], or simply by visiting her Tuesday through Friday at our parish office.

Beverly grew up in Northford, CT and has worked and lived in both the New Haven area and upstate New York.  She is a former florist and loves outdoor activities such as gardening, hiking and swimming.  'I'm very happy to be working with the staff at Trinity Church and look forward to being part of such a vibrant, community-focused organization.'

Holiday Bazaar Craft, Knit, Sew and More on Wednesdays

The Holiday Bazaar Craft, Knit, Sew and More continues each Wednesday morning from 9 until noon in the undercroft. Stop by and offer a hand. Share in the community and help support the Holiday Bazaar. What do we do? Hand stitching, simple machine sewing, ironing, scissor cutting, gift wrapping, sorting, knitting, putting on price tags and more. We need your help in order to sustain the craft/knit/sew. Contact Mary Ann Stroup for more information at [email protected]

We follow the Hamden Public School System for snow cancellation. If Hamden is closed so are we. If Hamden is delayed we still meet. Always safety first.

Why Confirmation
Many of us have been baptized as infant or have lost touch with the meaning of our faith over the course of the years. Confirmation is the moment when we confirm ourselves as Christians, reclaim the Christian faith as our own and commit ourselves to the mission of the Christian life. When we celebrate confirmation we specifically ask the Holy Spirit to mark God's seal on us, so that we can live in the spirit and mindset of God's Good News for us.
As baptized persons we will make a mature, more informed, and public affirmation of the promises made at our baptism. After making these affirmations the bishop will lay hands on each candidate, mark them with the ointment of God's Holy Spirit, and pray the prayer of confirmation.

Stewardship Update
trinityThank you to so many parishioners who made an annual pledge or contribution to Trinity during the Stewardship month of October. We have now received a total of 167 pledges and 6 partnerships for a total $416,831. The average annual pledge is currently $2,463, the highest ever for this time in the season. The goal for this year is $435,000, so we still have almost $19,000 to go. If you have not yet renewed your pledge or have never made a financial contribution to Trinity, please consider doing so. You can make an annual pledge or a one-time annual contribution-a partnership-to help support the parish. Now more than ever we need your support so that Trinity can continue to serve Christ by serving others through outreach, worship, music, and so many other ministries. Pledge/Partnership cards are available at the back of the church for you to complete and drop into the collection plate or you can call Sherrill Farkas at the Parish Office at 203-624-3101 who can assist you. Thank you again to all who have given so generously to support Trinity!!

Weekly Food Collection, Donations, and Volunteers for Loaves & Fishes

Please, don't forget to bring in non-perishable food items for the hungry that live among us. Donations have been declining and the need is still great! The donated food items are delivered to Loaves & Fishes, a ministry of the Episcopal Church of St. Paul and St. James. They also are in need of clothes (especially men's items) to distribute to their guests on a weekly basis. Loaves & Fishes currently serves between 200 and 300 people each week and the need keeps growing. You can drop off donations at Trinity on Sundays or during regular church hours, baskets are located at the rear of the church.

Trinity parishioner, David Rivera is collecting donations for Loaves & Fishes, if you would like to donate, please leave it in the tin located on the table in the back of the church.

Consider volunteering at Loaves & Fishes, volunteers arrive by 8:00 a.m. at St. PJs kitchen door and are usually done by 11:00 a.m. Parking is available in the lot behind the church or in the Comcast lot just before the church on Chapel Street.

If you have any questions please see or contact David Rivera at [email protected] or (203) 540-8161. Thanks for your help in this important ministry.
