Welcome to the NC Synod Youth and Family Ministry E-news.

December 2015
Upcoming events and trainings

* NEW - I need your help. I am looking to interview pastors whose congregational worship attendance is between 75-150. Would you be willing to let me buy you coffee and ask a few questions about discipleship, leadership and what those look like in your context? If so, let me know. I am hoping to do these interviews in January to listen, discern and find ways to work together. I appreciate your time.

* NEWThe Spring Youth & Family Ministry Network meetings are on the calendar. Anyone who works with those in the first third of life are invited. We gather at 10am and go to lunch together. Each time we gather around a specific topic but we also have time to share concerns, joys and challenges. There's great wisdom in the room. We're also going to be trying out our new conference call system so you can join via Go To Meeting.
January 19 - Children's Ministry
February 23 - Confirmation
March 8 - Retreats

* NEW - The synod's Book of Faith Task Group announces the "Tell It!" video contest for youth groups. Tell your favorite Bible story in less than 4 minutes and win a prize! (Not to mention you'll have great fun doing it and have a Bible story to share with your own congregation and the rest of the world.) Visit the synod's YouTube channel to see last year's submissions. Find contest details here.

NEW - LYO Assembly

App of the Month - Centering Prayer

Join me in trying out this app called Centering Prayer. I am enjoying starting the day with this. You are able to choose the texts, amount of silent time, (this extrovert is slowly adding minutes) sounds, prayers, etc. It might be a helpful tool for some.

Others - what app, blog, podcast, etc. would you suggest for moments of sabbath or study?

Resource of the Month

I am thankful for the LEAD team from the Gulf Coast Synod for their good work in leadership development. They have a great selection of webinars which are free under their 10 minute toolbox section. As we begin a new calendar year with new congregational councils, the one that could be a great conversation starter is the one entitled, "God has called you into leadership, now what?" This webinar is geared specifically for congregational council leaders. This is good stuff! Check it out here.

Video of the Month

Social Media Revolution 2015 - this is a great video clip on the power of social media. Mark your calendars for the 2016 Pre-Assembly event where we will welcome Rev. David Hansen to North Carolina to present "Digital Tools for Creating Community."  June 2nd from 9am - 5pm.

Making a Difference on our behalf...
LDR - Lutheran Disaster Response
The Situation:
A record number of people are fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East in search of a better way of life - especially Syrians. Although they come from different countries, for various reasons, they share a common goal: hope for a brighter future. Many have fled with only the clothes on their backs. With temperatures dropping, the already difficult situation is becoming life-threatening.

Our Response:
As a church, we are called to respond. Over the last four years, since conflict in Syria began, Lutheran Disaster Response has committed over $1 million to help Syrian refugees who have been displaced because of bombardment, civil war and the growing threat of ISIS. (Read more)
