Special Film Screening: The Story of Dr. Hellmut May June 15 & 16
Personal Historian Cory Bretz talks about
a Special Film Screening:
The Story of Dr. Hellmut May June 15 & 16

Olympic athlete and longtime figure skating coach at Kerrisdale Arena, Dr. Hellmut May trained some of Canada's best known Olympic skaters. His own first Olympic event was 1936 in Germany when he was just 14 years old - at the very same winter games attended by Hitler, Goering, and Goebbels!

This screening is in two parts, Part I on Saturday June 15 and Part II on Sunday June 16 both starting at 1:30pm at the Kerrisdale Seniors Centre, 5851 West Boulevard Vancouver, BC.

Cory Bretz produced this film in 2009 just before Dr. Hellmut May became Skate Canada's Hall of Fame 2010 inductee. He passed away in November 2011. This film is part of his legacy.

Admission is free. You can even buy a hot lunch at 11:30am at the best cafeteria in town at Kerrisdale Seniors Centre. Everyone welcome.

Part One on Saturday June 15 at 1:30pm covers Hellmut's Austrian family history going back to 1700s and follows him through his early skating triumphs and training for the 1940 Olympics, cancelled due to Germany's invasion of Poland. Hellmut survived the war as a commander of a radar station during World War II but found himself in deadly conditions in an Allied POW camp in 1945.

Part Two on Sunday June 16 at 1:30pm tells the story of Dr. Hellmut May as he rebuilds his life and home after the war, falls in love, and comes to Canada to become one of our best skating coaches. Locked in a competitive battle with fellow coach Edi Rada, his old skating rival, Dr. Hellmut May's ice-level view on the Canadian figure skating world is fascinating and authoritative.

The Story of Dr. Hellmut May is an excellent example of a life story and family history film that covers multiple careers and the many exploits of a loved one.

We'll have some great door prizes too.

We hope to see you there.
