tlm byron Toyota-Lift of Minnesota began a new chapter in its history with the groundbreaking ceremony performed Monday July 26, 2015 for its new Byron building. The 13,000 square-foot building will be completed sometime in late 2015 or early 2016. The building will be a regional center for new and used equipment sales, as well equipment rentals and repairs. Equipment will include forklifts, variable reach construction forklifts, rough terrain forklifts, scissor lifts, personnel and burden carriers, towing equipment and rough terrain aerial lifts.

"Just how serious is the worry over a trucking leaving the dock with a forklift still operating inside it?"

Serious, the most recent death we've seen was last month. You can read about that accident here http://bit.ly/1RAVFAD. We currently have a truck in our shop that fell from the back of a trailer. We will see several just like it through out the year.

Keep track
of where the truck's driver is at all times and be certain the trailer's wheels are chocked before any loading or unloading. IT IS a matter of life and death.

Why Forklift Planned Maintenance Requires Parts Support
Forklift planned maintenance requires support from all corners. The technician on site has a primary role of course but he can't effectively work alone. To be efficient and most affective he needs a solid team behind him. While many gypsy service departments have their mechanics "go it alone" out in the field. Those companies that bring the most value to the customer have solid capable dispatching, technical support and a strong forklift parts department.

The Forklift Planned Maintenance Disconnect
Shell Game We are often faced with bidding situations where we have to compete with a competitor's planned maintenance service offer that seems incredible. A prospect is sold on the belief that he can have  price, quality and speed. There are may ways in which a planned maintenance program can be assigned to the customer.

"Can you show us the OSHA regulation that says if we install safety devices on our forklifts we have to install them on every forklift?"

I have never been able to find an ANSI or OSHA regulation regarding the consistent application of warning devices. I would warn you though that under OSHA's general duty clause an employer is charged with doing their utmost to provide a safe environment for their employees. Having safety devices on some units but not on others is going to create an environment where the employee might be lulled into a sense of security because no visible or audible alert is present. If they are struck by a "stealth" truck OSHA will not overlook the fact that there is an unpredictable approach to outfitting equipment with warning devices and most likely invoke a general duty clause violation.

It should be said that there is no requirement for an audible or visible alarm beyond the factory provided horn, but if these optional alarms are present they must work and at a minimum should be consistent in any defined area.

29 U.S.C. 654, 5(a)1: Each employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause death or serious physical harm to his employees."
