"Why do you advise against pushing loads with our forklift?"

It isn't uncommon, but pushing multiple pallets leaves the pallets out front of the initial pallet unsupported and not in control. We have  found a letter of interpretation where OSHA addressed the practice and they were clear about it. You can see that letter here.

Is this your procedure?
Manage Your Risks and Control Your Costs
Train Your Trainer: Forklift Safety - Next Class July 28th
How much would it cost in emotional and financial terms if your company experienced a serious forklift accident? How much is it costing you today with the small accidents that happen every day? Should there be a reportable accident, how comfortable are you that in a courtroom your forklift safety program won't wither under scrutiny?

One way is limiting the risk to your employees, product and equipment by having well trained and certified forklift operators. With new personnel coming in, and others changing positions, how can you manage your risk and control your expenses effectively?

One answer is by having your own forklift trainer on staff. An individual familiar with your equipment, your physical layout and your company's plan and vision.

Toyota Lift of Minnesota is holding another "Train the Trainer" course July 28th. We invite you to look at the details and decide if it is time for you to control your risks and costs. Train the Trainer can be an easy choice.

Parts Department
It Is Only a Suggestion
Some time ago I wrote a parts department related piece talking about up-selling, Recently I found a related piece in Toyota's best practice guidelines and thought I would share it here. These are precisely the reasons our technicians need to do what they do every day. No, it is not entirely altruistic but it promotes a win/win situation for all parties.

Planned Forklift Maintenance, Who's in Your Wallet?
Many companies rely on programs that include "Planned Maintenance or PM only" technicians. This works for their needs but does it take into account your best interests? There is an active truism in the industry that drives larger dealerships towards PM only technicians:

"The best (and usually highest paid) technicians should be used for breakdown service calls and less talented technicians should be doing and learning through planned maintenance calls."

Regular maintenance trumps the laying on of hands ... Just saying.

"Our operator tipped his forklift forward off its steering wheels carrying only half the forklift's capacity according to the truck's data plate. The truck tipped into a stack of product so it didn't go too far, but what is going on?"

Your first step is to return to the data plate and look at the stated capacities there. Also review what attachment [if any] is listed. If an attachment has been added to the truck such as a side shifter, fork rotators or others, that attachment will limit to a degree the truck's capacity and should be noted on the plate. If you find it is not, request an updated plate from your trucks local dealership. It wouldn't be such a bad idea to have a representative from that dealership visit your site and inspect all your units, including operating conditions as well. Based on your example, there may be other concerns that need to be discussed.
Warehousing Systems
How Warehouse Safety Technology is Changing Everything
A fulfillment center with row upon row of pallet racks. Eight dock doors occupy one wall of the building, some for receiving, some for shipping. Pick workers work in the rack aisles pushing carts and pallet jacks loaded with picked orders. Other pick workers have empty totes on carts for pulling orders. Fork trucks stock pallet rack and pull bulk stock for large orders. Dock doors are left open much of the time, even when there's no trailer at the dock.
