The Do's and Don'ts of Buying Used Lift Trucks
A showroom full of shiny new lift trucks is alluring. It's hard to resist the display models' sleek designs, high-tech features, and glossy paint jobs. For some buyers, though, a brand-new truck is more than they need; the latest model may be too expensive or "overqualified" for the particular job at hand. In those circumstances, a used lift truck might be a better choice.

When should you consider buying a used truck rather than a new one? And how do you make sure you're getting what you need at the right price? We asked three lift truck dealers who do a big business in used vehicles for some guidelines and advice. Here's what they had to say.

"We had your trainer in here telling us our safety rewards were questionable"

It is your decision but OSHA isn't keen on rewards for safety, for fear that individuals might be "forced" to be quiet about incidents so rewards are given. We know there are others that argue that rewards can be a part of a well managed safety program and there may be merit in that but we are a little cynical in our view. Our position would be to not try to rub up against any OSHA position. At the very least you'll want to be true to yourself that the rewards aren't stifling reporting.
Parts Department
Are Low Cost Forklift Parts A Scam?
Maybe there are times when settling for something less than the best is an acceptable path to take. You might purchase the house brand of sugar over the C&H brand. Maybe there isn't a lot of difference between NyQuil and the store's "Multi-Symptom Nighttime Cold/Flu Relief, and isn't table salt table salt after all? However, despite our willingness to "settle" from time to time, there are other occasions where we're going to demand the original. Who wants a cold can of "Dr. Snap" over "Dr. Pepper"? At breakfast do you smile while pouring yourself a bowl of "Honey Nut Scooters", no you probably enjoy the real deal Honey Nut Cheerios don't you?

"We have an older forklift with plenty of room for a second rider, why can't we allow that?"

Sure you can, as soon as you can point to where in the operator's manual it says you can. We know that on some makes there is ample room for riders to sit next to the operator, just don't. If it didn't come with two seats, it isn't meant for two people.

5 Roadblocks to Customer Service
In the day to day activities of businesses, there are a lot of challenges that have to be overcome. Each industry has their unique problems, but some problems seem to be common for everyone. An example of that will be the internal challenges that are experienced.

All businesses sell something. In our industry its equipment, equipment parts, rentals and repairs. All of these fall under the broader umbrella of customer service. The value or quality of customer service can be reduced when internally people and departments aren't connecting well, or in some cases when departmental goals or priorities aren't in sync.

Warehousing Systems
A Quick Guide for Your Own Intelligent Warehouse
In the not too distant past, before computers, before the internet was even a twinkle in anyone's eye, warehouses were nothing more then a dumping ground for bodies, into a labor intensive environment as brawn was more important than brain. That's right folks, a company would take their misfits, malcontents and ne'er-do-wells and place them right into the warehouse grind and for some, it was a "last chance" to demonstrate to the company they could still be a productive employee.  If they couldn't redeem themselves here, they weren't worth saving and were terminated.
