That Used Forklift, Asset or Liability?
|
Your forklift trade in, oh the controversy that swirls around it. Oblivious to the customer, a used forklift returning to the dealership for resale as a trade in or lease end unit starts a small dust up of questions internally.
|
"Our pallet loads are too big to see around so they tell me to go in reverse, I don't feel that's safe"
You're going to have to work to become comfortable with the procedure. It is simply THE safest direction of travel when loads are too large to see around or over. If you find the position awkward, ask about hand grips that can be added to the overhead guard to help with back strain.

Parts Department
Get More Than you Pay For
|
Recently we had the opportunity to review in depth the purchasing habits of a customer who purchases both Toyota genuine parts and a fair amount of non-OEM Toyota parts. Like many of us that run to NAPA versus the local car dealership, our customer believes that buying the non-OEM part in most cases is the lower price alternative, and in many cases is at least equal in value. What we found, and communicated to them showed that thinking was untrue.
|
"I'm not allowed to drive my lift to the lunch room or time clock. All they tell me is that it is because of safety concerns, really?"
I'm not certain why they wouldn't go a little deeper with their explanation, or if they did and you missed it. Limiting forklift traffic near areas with consistent pedestrian makes perfect safety sense. Especially if you're workplace hasn't gone as far as defining specific pedestrian and forklift pathways.

Customer Service: What's In Your Van?
|
Not everything in forklift service is immediately discernible by the customer, and what is visible does not always define at depth who the company is, or what level their commitment to customer service is. Brochures, branded service vehicles and websites only provide a superficial view of the company, a view designed to sell, not speak to commitment or capabilities. Individuals responsible for selecting a forklift maintenance provider have to know where else to look, but where?

Rental Department
Question, Would You Rent A Yugo or Mercedes?
|
From time to time businesses from lumber yards to medical device manufacturers find themselves behind in production due to shortages in material handling equipment. With businesses running lean, there is often no fat in equipment inventory for standard production periods. So when the crush comes, they find they need to look to short term rentals. Now there is no shortage of rental outfits willing and quite able to rent equipment, and it's here we would like to make a point, or possibly two.

Order Picking Error Rates: What's Acceptable?
|
It's easy to say that you're striving for 100% accurate pick rates, but how realistic is that goal? And should it be the actual number you shoot for? Mis-picked orders, any number of them, are expensive. Incorrect orders are expensive to re-pick. They're expensive to return and restock. Shipping dollars are lost both directions. Most importantly, mistakes are expensive because they can cost you customers.
The 2013 WERC/DCVelocity annual distribution center measures report is one place to look in general. Its findings for 2013 (the survey asked over 500 companies to provide data on over 40 metrics, including order picking accuracy), stated that median performance for those who answered was 99.5%. This is an admirable goal, but if 100% is unattainable over time, is the median score the right one to pursue? From Material Handling Experts: Cisco-Eagle
