How Often Should You Replace Your Forklift?
|
To maintain a proper level of efficiency and safety, it is important to know when you need to replace your forklift. Older, less efficient forklifts can become a burden to the warehouse. They can make it harder for employees to be effective in their jobs. Frustration over a forklift that is slow or in constant need of repair can increase maintenance expenses, slow productivity and frustrate your staff. How do you know when it is time to replace your warehouses forklift? Consider the MaintenanceAre you diligent in keeping your forklift properly maintained? If you do not have it serviced regularly, you can end up causing the forklift to age quickly. Business owners must be aware of the maintenance requirements to keep their forklift working safely and effectively. If the machine is always in need of repair, it can increase your costs as profits suffer while your staff has to wait for the machine to be repaired. It slows the productivity of the warehouse and becomes a hindrance on your staff. Several companies use forklifts longer than they should. When a forklift is pushed too far past its lifespan, it can increase the risk of accidents. You can end up spending more money to continually repair your forklift versus investing in a modern machine.

"They made us remove the side shifter from our forklift so it could lift more. How much capacity did we gain?"
Removing an attachment will change the numbers involved in calculating the trucks capacity. To know specifically, what that change is, work with the truck's local dealership to order a new data plate. OSHA requires an accurate data plate. Please see that someone initiates that request now.

Parts Department
Much More than Simply Parts Is Parts
|
Often I'm reminded that behind every good technician there are some excellent parts people. Toyota Lift of Minnesota like many dealerships has over the years been fortunate to find, develop, then retain excellent personnel to staff both the front and back part counters. These folks fight the good fight daily balancing multiple demands on their time, differing order cut off times, part requests with varying levels of completeness regarding information and so much more.
|
"Can't our people make at least small repairs to our forklift? What qualifications are required to do that sort of thing?"
An individual doing the repairs has to be competent and authorized. OSHA requirement 1910.178(q)(1) states "All repairs shall be made by authorized personnel." The regulation doesn't define a lot, and we don't have information from anyone at OSHA who can give the authorization, but we'll assume it's the equipment's owner. More, we'll point to OSHA's general duty clause which in short says you have to do everything you can to maintain a safe working environment. You will most certainly want to be responsible about who you authorize to work on your forklift. Part of that job is always being vigilant for any developing safety concerns.

8 Savings Found In Your Forklift Service Manual
|
First a secret, as a dealership we're unable to secure maintenance agreements with the majority of businesses using our product. There, we said it. Now that is out there we'll state why that is concerning. First it means that as a business we are missing out on some aftermarket support dollars, no one would applaud that. Secondly, important to the user and to our original equipment manufacturers is that without close dealership support, a product is very likely not to operate at optimum levels and it is quite likely the equipment will have its service life shortened. If the owner/user's experience is less than satisfactory, do you think they will repeat that purchase?

Warehousing Systems
Avoid These Common Warehouse Layout Mistakes
|
It's not easy to understand when facility layout is causing significant problems for an operation. Everything in a warehouse or distribution facility can be affected by the way the warehouse is planned and laid out. You may be suffering from over-forecasted demand for product and under-forecasted need for square footage. Executives may not fully understand what it takes to receive, store, and ship orders. What are some of the more common problems when it comes to facility layout? You may have some limitations on that, but you often can tweak, reconfigure, or otherwise change the layout of your facility so that it is more productive, uses its space correctly, or reduces overhead costs. .
