Infographic - 20 Top Forklift Manufacturers
Salesman Twenty suppliers of approximately thirty brands slug it out annually competing to be the manufacturer that tops all others in the installation of new lift trucks. The role of forklifts play in getting things from here to there can't be overstated. Any product large or small wouldn't be where it's at without the aid of a forklift, they are a critical part of any supply chain.

Quoting Modern Materials Handling "The dust has settled. Following two years of very strong growth in lift truck sales, shipments leveled off in 2012. With growth at just a fraction of a percent, worldwide sales didn't match the 27% growth in 2011 or the 32% growth in 2010. Of course, those years came on the heels of a 39% contraction, and many in the industry remain excited to see growth of any kind, however small."

"We've got a load of our daily operator check sheets going back for a long time. How long do we have to keep them?"

OSHA requires the pre-shift inspection be completed, but it doesn't require documentation. For that reason you can determine how long to keep them. Document your inspections and determine a period of time you see as responsible for retaining the inspection sheets. You should write that all into your safety policy book.
For the Veterans - Free Forklift Safety Certification
Know a Vet? Let's Help the Vet!
With the support of Toyota Material Handling, Toyota Lift of Minnesota has been certifying veterans for forklift operation for over two years. That work continues still. Our next class is scheduled for July 16th, with another scheduled for August 14th. You can read more about that and register through this link for tomorrow's class, here for the August date. Please forward to anyone that may be interested or qualified for this certification.

As stated, we will be continually offering additional dates through 2014. You can always watch our event calendar for updates on class scheduling. We work to have dates set on the calendar for the two upcoming months.

Our hats off to Toyota Material Handling for their ongoing support for our veterans.
Parts Department
Cats, Dogs, Service and Parts
Directly or indirectly I have touched on the relationships that develop between members of the service and parts departments. Generally these relationships are fodder for many good-natured jokes, but like a lot of good jokes, there is sometimes a grain of truth in them.

What does that mean to you the forklift owner?

"We're having problems with our seat-belts getting stuck when we release them, isn't that an OSHA issue?"

We have heard that if a seat-belt is allowed to snap back into its retractor that they are difficult to pull out for use again. That in itself is not an issue for OSHA [we've asked], it would be an issue if it were not worked free and in use when the forklift is in use. We don't see it as an ideal situation, but there is a need to take care in how the belt is released in order to prevent what may become an unsafe condition.

Operator's Manual: Revealing the Secrets
There it is, right there behind us generally, the lift truck's operator's manual. Full of insights and information critical to the safe use of our forklift and much more, certainly it's worth a few moments of discovery. Uncovering the secret of the operator's manual only takes the time it costs to open it to become familiar with the value found inside and then make it a practice to share that information with your operators.

Wheel Chocks in Place?
This isn't a repeat of last month's photo, it's a new example of the same problem. We cannot state strongly enough that you should have a procedure to check that all trucks at your dock have their wheels chocked before anyone starts to load or unload them. We're not certain why someone thought they could operate safely without a dock plate.

Warehousing Systems
Hazard Communication in the Warehouse
forklifts blurred in warehouse Warehouses often store hazardous materials, these materials after all have to be warehoused and transported just like any other commodity. The presence of hazardous materials in the warehouse requires that a high degree of attention is given to communicating the dangers surrounding the material, what procedures are needed handling the material and what action points there are should something go wrong.

While never without risk, handling hazardous materials can be made safer with a sound approach to safety solutions.
