Toyota Lift of Minnesota was honored for dealership excellence by Toyota Material Handling, receiving the President's Award for the year 2013 recently. An excellent year marked by unprecedented growth in all departments, we are honored to have received the award and will work to repeat the effort in 2014. "We repair our own forklift fleet, when asked by your salesman about lockout/tagout procedures we were at a loss for an answer"

It might be said that it is an easy safety oversight. Your techs might have all the right training, tools and equipment but you still need a plan for dealing with hazardous energy. As an example, gravity around a forklift is generally fairly obvious. How are you going to manage safety when dealing with gravity while you have the forklift blocked up? What's your plan when your working with mast rails or the carriage? How about something as non-threatening as the doors of the forklift's cab? What requires a lockout/tagout procedure and what might be addressed by a safety procedure?

All this needs to be in your safety policy, and must be communicated to your maintenance crew. Most importantly you need to make certain the procedures are followed.

Questions or concerns? Our suggestion is that you work with OSHA through a workplace safety consultation. It costs nothing, and might save you something invaluable.
Rental Department
Beware: Lipstick on a Pig
When you need to rent a forklift you have more choices than you'll have time to explore. How can you be certain you'll get equipment that merits the rate you're going to pay? Are you going to get well maintained late model equipment, or will you receive a nicely painted lift that passed it's expiration date long ago?

Warehouse and Logistic News published an article dealing with this issue recently:

Forklift rental/lease in one form or another is still the most popular form of forklift acquisition in Britain, accounting for about 70% of all trucks sold. But of the many snares lurking in the small print of rental agreements there is one, perhaps, that is overlooked more than the others and is particularly relevant in short-term hire deals to get users over seasonal peaks, for example. The reason is that short-term hire relies heavily on second hand trucks where the quality can vary so widely that the user not only often gets compromised on site efficiency but a threat to safety issues.

Remember, we invite you to call us at 763-425-9066 or 800-523-0611. We will put you in touch with your area's territory manager or our rental manager, answer your questions.
Manage Your Risks and Costs
Train Your Trainer: Forklift Safety - Next Class in Two Weeks
How much would it cost in emotional and financial terms if your company experienced a serious forklift accident? How much is it costing you today with the small accidents that happen every day? Should there be a reportable accident how comfortable are you that in a courtroom your forklift safety program won't wither under scrutiny?

One form is limiting the risk to your employees, product and equipment by having well trained and certified forklift operators. With new personnel coming in, and others changing positions, how can you manage your risk and control your expenses effectively?

One answer is by having your own forklift trainer on staff. An individual familiar with your equipment, your physical layout and your company's plan and vision.

Toyota Lift of Minnesota is holding another "Train the Trainer" course April 29th. We invite you to look at the details and decide if it is time for you to control your risks and costs. Train the Trainer can be an easy choice.

The Lost Sale: Recording Your Disappointment
Part shelves The lost sale is the bane of any distributor. When a part sale is lost to another, it's generally because you didn't have something in stock. Sure, it might happen occasionally because of pricing but first and foremost availability is at the root of most of the lost sale incidents. You can call "swing and a miss" as the parts customer leaves the store or hangs up without a sale occurring. But there is an opportunity to salvage something from the occasion, and that is done by recording the lost sale..

"How much weight can we add to our forklift"

That's easy to calculate, just add ZERO to your forklift's current weight. You cannot modify your forklift in any way to increase it's lifting capacity. OSHA regulation 1910.178(a)(4) states: Modifications and additions which affect capacity and safe operation shall not be performed by the customer or user without manufacturers prior written approval. Capacity, operation, and maintenance instruction plates, tags, or decals shall be changed accordingly.

You can call your forklift's manufacturer. But you would be time and money ahead simply working with us or any dealership to purchase a forklift with the capacity you need, or if its a short term need, renting is always a good option.

When Forklift Maintenance Isn't
Many forklift owners choose to maintain their fleets utilizing their own maintenance staff. We understand this and acknowledge it can be done in a manner that both serves the needs of those companies and the requirement to provide proper maintenance. Done correctly it will prolong the useful life of the equipment and insure it is operating safely.

Suffice it to say however, that due diligence and responsibility are commodities not often seen.

Budgeting in the Wrong Areas
Everyone has to operate within their means, and generally this means that decisions have to be made regarding priorities.

Cutting back on maintenance, or using low cost providers only delays the inevitable often making matters worse. Ever ask yourself why large companies don't rely on "budget" lift truck repairs?
