Hen's Teeth and Good Used Equipment
|
The recession seems to be behind us, but we are still working to distance ourselves from its impact. One area impacted everywhere is the availability of good used equipment. During the recession forklift purchases like everything else fell off considerably. Over the years 2008 through 2010 we saw new truck sales fall by over thirty percent. With business off everywhere forklifts saw less usage, and companies understandably were more apt to retain their current equipment than purchase new. Compounding the situation is as business improved many companies turned to rentals or used equipment to reduce their capital expenditures. At Toyota Lift of Minnesota we are working to build our inventory of quality used equipment. You can see some of our inventory through this link, or call or email us from this webpage for even more equipment options. In the third quarter edition of the MHEDA Journal two industry leaders give their opinions as to when used equipment might be available again. Follow the link below for their answers, both are succinct and to the point.

"The President of the company took your course in 2008 and became certified to certify our employees. We are almost out of certificates and I want to know how to get more."
More importantly it's wonderful you continue training and certification! While the pre-printed cards and wall certificates are nice, you can produce your own. We suggest that the wallet cards print both the completed and expiration dates [three years apart], the forklift classes certified for, the trainers name and company, and allow room for the trainer's signature.
If you are printing wall certificates print your company's name, the instructor's name and allow room for his/her signature and the date of completion.
You can call or email us and we'd be happy to give you examples of either and templates if you would like.
Remember to retain the test taken by your drivers. Keep them in a file for each employee and separated from their personnel file.

Rental Growth to Accelerate
| Rentals were mentioned earlier as one area companies turned during the recession. Truth be said, it is an area that is still seeing growth as it has become an area companies are using to get out from under costs as well as other responsibilities of fleet management. We invite you to call or email us if this is an area you'd like to explore.
The American Rental Association (ARA) remains bullish on growth prospects for the North American rental industry through to 2017, although it has slightly reduced its estimated growth for 2014.

Forklift Maintenance: 120 Pages of the Basics
|
Forklift maintenance. It starts at and comes down to the basics really, the planned or preventative maintenance call [PM]. The scheduled inspection and light maintenance done to a forklift throughout the year. Based on hourly usage, a PM might be performed as infrequently as twice a year, or as often as monthly. A technician is dispatched to go over the key inspection points on a lift, note any developing issues or safety concerns and perform a little light maintenance [fluid changes, lubrication, adjustments] while performing that inspection.

"We took our attachment off our forklift, it wasn't working right. Now we're told our forklift needs a new serial number?"
Not a serial number, you will need to request a new data plate that matches your forklift's current configuration. By removing the attachment you've modified its capacity and that has to be available to the operators using the equipment. Reference OSHA regulations here and focus on the section 1910.178(a)(5). As always, call or email us and we would be more than happy to come to your site and go over your changes or proposed changes to help guide you.

An Oil Filter by Any Other Name
|
What's in a name? That which we call an oil filter by any other name would filter as well: Alright, that's probably taking too big a liberty isn't it? You have tens of thousands of dollars invested in the best forklift on the market. Then you allow your maintenance department or service provider to save a few dollars buying the "might fit" or off brand oil filter?

Safety and Forklift Maintenance
|
Blocking and cribbing is a common practice working with forklifts and other equipment. There are right ways, and as illustrated there are wrong ways. If blocking/cribbing occurs in your place of business. Monitor how it's done to be certain risk isn't a part of your business model.
