Forklift Leasing - How Long Should You Lease?
|
It is a question wrestled over often, and one addressed very well by our Toyota peers Pro-Lift Industrial Equipment in an article they shared recently. We wanted to share that with you here: You've weighed the pros and cons of leasing your forklift versus a purchase and have decided to lease. Historically your company has selected a 5-year term; however, a shorter term lease could benefit your production and budget. Consider these factors when determining the length of your lease term.

"One of your sales reps told us using our forklift jack wasn't safe. It's sold as a forklift jack and everyone uses them. Where does he get off saying that?"
At first blush it sounds as if he could have been a little more clear. There are a number of issues surrounding the use of lifting equipment ranging from what type is used, what lifting points you're using, blocking or cribbing of the equipment being worked on and your lockout/tagout procedures.
While it's not entirely clear, it appears that recently a death occurred when a lifting "device" failed crushing the technician.
The first point and probably the point our rep was trying to make is that you cannot rely on the forklift jack as a support device. It can only be used to lift the forklift up to a point where blocking or cribbing can be put in place. Beyond that based on our work with OSHA, if you are doing this type of work you need to have a lock out/tag out procedure in place and in writing in your safety procedures. Additionally everyone involved in this type of work must be trained in that procedure.
Its uncomplicated, it involves only common sense, and it's mandatory. You can see our procedure by following this link, and if you would like you can call us and we'd be happy to visit your site and help you with yours.

Rental Forklifts, Market Asking for Changes within the Dealership
| Recently we ran across an article in the Magazine "Material Handling Wholesaler" written by Garry Bartecki that gave some interesting insights to rental departments in our industry and others. Here is a pull out from that article:
Rental is making a comeback or maybe it is a permanent change in how customers now want to do business. By rental I, am referring to a rental model that offers up flexibility in terms of utilization and a lack of financial risk. If this scenario does come true, a material handling dealer could become more of a pure rental company than an equipment dealer primarily in the business of selling lift trucks, because a pure rental business is a completely new business that requires a different approach as far as management is concerned.

Forklift Safety Training and 3rd Party Trainers
|
There has always been considerable discussions here at Toyota Lift of Minnesota regarding the validity or value of forklift safety training received by a company's new employee if that employee wasn't trained by his new employer. Third party forklift safety training exists, and companies are seen calling on by requiring applicants to possess forklift training. Are they considering that training "enough"?

"Shouldn't we have gloves available to change our LP Tanks?"
In a word, "Yes". Anyone familiar with changing an LP [liquid propane] is familiar with the smell and how quickly frost can form if LP is released while coupling or uncoupling. Frostbite is a very real possibility and gloves [along with safety glasses] reduce risks associated with the change. We commonly hear that it isn't possible to keep gloves available and understand that problem. There are however products that help with that. You can "mount" them on every truck reasonably. Talk to your supervisors or managers and ask that they contact us if they need help resolving the issue. You can read a small article we wrote about this here, that includes links to some great safety resources.

Cheap Forklift Parts: Reflecting Badly
|
Recently we posted an article about a small part on your forklift and how even there you can be sucked into the belief that non-OEM parts are viable and can save you money. Here is another "small" item, not critical to the operation of your lift, but certainly just as capable of costing your more than you save for your efforts. Read More
