What If "New" Was in Your Price Range?
|
Searching for the good used forklift has never been harder, or more risky. Before you add that on-line cream puff to your shopping cart we have something to share with you. If you have never explored leasing before, now is the time. The most common objection to this acquisition strategy is: "We don't use them as hard as some places. Buying a new one is not as cost effective as a used lift." Well times they are a changin'. Let's touch on why.
|
"Can you provide us certification that your people can work on forklifts?"
This is very similar to a question we had last month. Presuming you're looking for some governmental agency's certification [such as OSHA or ANSI] you won't find it.
OSHA does state in 1910.178(q)(1) Any power-operated industrial truck not in safe operating condition shall be removed from service. All repairs shall be made by authorized personnel. While ITSDF states Only trained and authorized personnel shall be permitted to maintain, repair, adjust, and inspect industrial trucks, and in accordance with manufacturer's specifications.
All Tier I maintenance providers can likely provide you with certifications for it technicians, generally these are issued after training by one of the original equipment manufacturers they represent.
In the end you're left to authorize who works on your forklifts. With as many critical concerns involved in maintenance and so many involving safety you'll want to be certain you've chosen well should maintenance be a factor in any accident or claim.

Rental Department
To Rent, Or Not to Rent
| Our industry peer Liftow of Canada published an article recently raising questions to consider regarding rental forklifts:
Renting a forklift may seem like an obvious choice, but it's a fine line between temporarily saving money by forgoing a rental and receiving a significant return on investment. Even if your business could get by on sheer manpower alone, would it be worth the time and potential liability? Below are a couple considerations that can help you determine when a forklift rental is the most economical choice for your business

Service Department
Employee Engagement And Customer Service
|
Of course we're a forklift dealership, and I'll make no attempt to pretend I can speak from anything other than experience when it comes to anything human resource related, but I felt compelled to put something down as it does relate ultimately to customer service. This is an internal example of what we do in order to enhance and improve on our efforts towards optimum customer service. Some years ago we started a process that did away with the annual "review" in favor of regular "engagement" meetings. The design of these meetings was for a two way dialog to happen, not simply me speaking at them, but giving them opportunity to speak at me.
|
"We're required to back up when carrying many of our loads, but our safety director won't authorize us installing mirrors saying they're unsafe
While that seems like a judgement call it's not that uncommon a claim. Mirrors can make it easier to see behind a forklift, but they're often cited for allowing for negligent driving as operators become to depend on them solely for navigating in reverse.
If all of your forklift operators are properly trained [and supervised] the use of mirrors can be given consideration to augment visibility around the forklift, but they are mandatory.

Parts Department
Forklift Parts and Measuring Customer Service
|
Regardless of whether you call it level of service, fill rate or shelf availability it comes down to one single definition...it is a measure of a dealer's ability to have the right forklift parts on the shelf at the right price at the right time. The goal of the parts department should be to maintain somewhere between 85% and 90% shelf availability in order to consistently service his customer base. Read More
