Sellick: For absolute dependability with the big jobs

Why can't I have a suicide knob for my forklift?

Likely it is a decision made by your employer as many original equipment manufacturers offer them as optional equipment.

OSHA states in 1926.602(c)(1)(iv) "Steering or spinner knobs shall not be attached to the steering wheel unless the steering mechanism is of a type that prevents road reactions from causing the steering hand wheel to spin. The steering knob shall be mounted within the periphery of the wheel."

Our interpretation is when steering can be accomplished with either hand, and the steering prevents road reactions from causing the hand wheel to spin (power steering or equivalent), steering knobs may be used.
Steering knobs are seen as both efficient and dangerous, you'll just have to work with your company to see which camp it falls into.

Forklift Truck Users Look to Short Term Rentals
Toyota in lumber yard It seems that business globally differs less and less as time passes. We ran across an article from the UK some time ago that covers trends seen on this side of the ocean. From Material Handling World:

To cope with seasonal supply chain throughput spikes, companies have always looked to supplement their lift truck fleets by drafting in extra vehicles on short term rental contracts.

But, with more and more businesses seeking to meet their materials handling needs without making a long term financial commitment, the UK market for short term rental trucks is growing significantly.

In fact, according to statistics recently issued by international market research company, RedShift, some 10 per cent of the forklift trucks currently operating across Europe have been supplied on a short term rental contract.

For the Veterans - Through Toyota, Free Certification Continues
Know a Vet? Let's Help the Vet!
Sales IconOur next class is scheduled for July 17th. You can read more about that and register through this link.

We also have an additional date already scheduled for August 21st. Follow this link for details and the opportunity to register.

We ask that you consider any veteran you know who may be involved in a job search and suggest this certification to them. Logistics is always looking for dependable personnel, and forklift certification is often required prior to consideration for employment.

Through Toyota's generosity, we will be continually offering additional dates through 2013. You can always watch our event calendar for updates as they occur.

Denial Ain't Just a River in Egypt
lock out During an employee engagement meeting recently I expressed my disappointment with one of our technicians regarding the lack of written detail on a planned maintenance work order he'd written. He explained to me "the customer doesn't want to hear it."

It isn't all that uncommon I told him. We often receive feedback from budget conscience customers that needed repairs we uncover aren't something they want to hear about and more concerning, something they don't want us to even make note of in our documentation.

We fix our own forklifts, someone told us this isn't safe. Where would that come from?

There are about as many reason for accidents as there are accidents. Generally poor safety procedures and training are at the top of the list. However, there are a number of problems that may affect safety related to maintenance. CO levels on internal combustion units, steering,  brakes, and safety devices that are malfunctioning or simply don't work. These are just some of a number of areas we see every week that are not reported or repaired when maintenance isn't done by a tier one provider.

Certainly maintenance CAN be done thoroughly by the equipment owner, but our experience is simply that it rarely is. In the event of an accident OSHA is going to look very close at maintenance records. You'll want to be certain your people are qualified and that maintenance is done responsibly.
Parts Department
When A Savings Isn't
Parts counter man Alright, here we go. Another area where there are so many savings opportunities. Whether you run to a NAPA or dial up one of the dozen or so aftermarket forklift part houses, you're never short of options for ignition parts. And the savings, oh yes the savings are huge. It's a wonder those OE part distributors aren't jailed for trying to get the prices they want for the same parts.

While You Were Out ..
Fun is fun and yes boys will be boys, but a consistent pattern of you being seen in the yard or out in the warehouse will prevent the occasional situation like this. It's incredible just how effective management by walking around can be at limiting your exposure to risk. Best yet, it gets you out of the office and costs very little.

U.S. Demand for Pallets Rising 3.5% Annually
Warehouse order picker There simply everywhere around us it seems. But how much do we know of them or the industry that surrounds them? From Tom Andel with Material Handling and Logistics, here's an article that deals directly with the subject:

Sales of new and refurbished pallets will expand 3.5 percent per year through 2017 to 1.3 billion units, valued at $16.9 billion, according to a new study from The Freedonia Group, Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market research firm. The "Pallets" report states that a more favorable economic climate will induce companies to discard aging refurbished units and purchase new ones, fueling stronger sales growth.

Block pallets are expected to make up a larger share of the market total, and growing numbers of manufacturers will replace their existing stringer pallets with new block units.
