Do You Have Green Initiatives?
|
There is more focus than ever on our carbon footprint. Green Initiative, according to Wikipedia, "has as its main object offset the greenhouse gases emitted by human activities." Leading the way in are progressive companies and organizations with marketing savvy. The steps may be as small as installing lights that turn off automatically when there is no motion in a room for a set time period, to switching from an internal combustion forklift to an electric one. Electric forklifts also operate more quietly, with greater reliability, and with less planned maintenance. The fuel savings alone can also be a great cost saving. One of the most common objections to electric powered lifts has been the sustainability of power. Batteries would discharge leaving the operator with the choice of waiting a full shift to re-charge, or swapping it out. Changing batters requires space, extra equipment, and more capital investment. We can perhaps overcome this common objection with a new opportunity or fast charger from one of our partner suppliers. Contact us today to learn more.

What does the law say about using cell phone while I'm on my forklift?
This is similar to last month's question about listening to music with ear buds or headphones. It's all about distractions in the workplace and avoidable dangers.
We cannot find a ruling or finding given by OSHA but believe, in the event of an accident involving a distracted forklift driver, that OSHA will likely look sharply to the employer and their actions to limit driver distractions.
Play the tape forward. If an accident occurs prompting an OSHA investigation and they uncover a workplace environment which allows for the type of distraction that contributed to the accident, certainly your employer is going to be cited for a violation under the general duty clause.
Limit your distractions, limit the likelihood of a tragedy you don't want to be a part of.

Buy, Lease or Rent?
| From an article through Material Handling and Logistics. A lot of articles look at the pros and cons of buying versus leasing of material handling equipment.
Renting seems to be a minor afterthought. However, given the economic climate over the last couple of years, plus the possibility of new accounting rules, renting has been gaining more status and is now being considered as much of a viable option as buying or leasing.

For the Veterans - Through Toyota, Free Certification Continues
Know a Vet? Let's Help the Vet!
|
Our next class is scheduled for June 5th. You can read more about that through this link. We ask that you consider any veteran you know who may be involved in a job search and suggest this certification to them. Logistics is always looking for dependable personnel, and forklift certification is often required prior to consideration for employment. Through Toyota's generosity, we will be continually offering additional dates through 2013. A July and August date should be set soon. You can always watch our event calendar for updates as they occur.

How Are You Training Your Technician?
|

Or perhaps you wonder if there is something you can do to help them become more efficient at what they do. Through Toyota Lift of Minnesota and Toyota Material Handling there are options available to you.

No one can show me where it says I can't put a trailer ball on my forks.
Well they could, perhaps not specifically but clearly enough. OSHA has a standard 1910.178(a)(4) that states: Modifications and additions which affect capacity and safe operation shall not be performed by the customer or user without manufacturers prior written approval. Capacity, operation, and maintenance instruction plates, tags, or decals shall be changed accordingly. We can start with one major manufacturer stating: Modifications and additions shall not be approved by Cascade unless the changes are made by Cascade or an approved supplier. You're not going to get that approval. The forks were tempered when they were manufactured, cutting or burning a hole into the fork, or even welding on the fork modifies the forks capacity. You will unlikely quantify to what degree that's been done, therefore you have a fork with an unrated capacity. Beyond the additional risk to you or your employees, a modified fork is low fruit during an OSHA inspection. It certainly isn't worth the risk, or at the very least a fine. There are attachments you can purchase for trailer balls. Further you can purchase forks from several manufacturers that come with a rated capacity, and the hole you want already present.

With Forklift Tires It's More than Round and Black
|
Tire failure occurs from time to time. Rubber separates from the banding or in some cases the rubber's durometer or hardness is poor. Generally these failures are uncovered or seen in a relatively short period of time or use. Both conditions create an unsafe condition in that they contribute to the forklifts instability while in motion, risking control issues as well as loss of loads. Read More

Bringing You Material Handling Moments
|
You know there is something wrong with us when we jump up in front of the TV or in a movie to point out the forklift, conveyor or other material handling equipment. Certainly everyone around us is interested in it right? While touring in Italy earlier this month, James Renner, our Sales Administrator stopped to snap this picture of two Toyotas queued up to load the cruise liner. Thanks for the photo James
