More on Considering a Used Forklift
|
There are a number of factors that need to be considered when you contemplate the purchase of a used forklift. Toyota Lift of Minnesota recently shared two articles through TuffWerx touching on the high points. You can see the first article through this link, what follows here is the second of those articles: If you're interested in buying a used forklift, it may be because your previous unit suddenly needs replacement, or you're in need of a truck to sustain your day-to-day operations. No matter how serious your need is, I caution you to take the time to carefully inspect any unit before you buy.

I'm worried over just how long or when we have to have our forklift's CO emissions tested?
It is a good question, above all be responsible in your approach to it. First and foremost have it done at least annually. Minnesota rules require that it be done during regular maintenance. However, our experience has taught us that OSHA inspectors during their visit may require to see records that it has been done quarterly. It's our belief that those inspectors are looking back to the first part of the rule that says you must monitor air quality quarterly in your building. Rule of thumb is the older the truck, the more frequently you might want to perform tailpipe testing. Additionally, if you're doing the testing yourself, you may want to do them at least quarterly. Again, based on our experience, your inspector will look at the surrounding circumstances to your testing and make a decision regarding frequency.
You can read the rule here.
Additionally, keep your forklift emission test results in a file separate from your forklift's maintenance file. If you need help on how to monitor your building economically give us a call or email, we'll give you the method we use here.

Financial Plans Allow Cash-strapped Companies to Get the Lift Trucks They Need
| From an article through Material Handling and Logistics. Most material handling equipment dealers never expected to morph into something resembling a financial advisor. They provide the machine, not the means.
But times have changed. It's difficult to find a corporate manager exempt from the seemingly contradictory directives to reduce capital outlay while increasing operational effectiveness. Material handling professionals in all industry verticals must do more with less.
To preserve their own competitiveness, leading equipment dealers are crossing the line that once separated those who sell equipment from those who make equipment financially accessible.
Today, there are many ways to obtain lift trucks without desecrating the bottom line. The trick is sifting through the numerous solutions available. Although it's easy to find sources for renting, financing or leasing lift trucks these days, clear definitions of those concepts can be hard to come by, and now is not the time for guessing.

Who Is Your Best Material Handling Ally?
|
Being called a "jack of all trades" can be taken a couple of ways whether you include the "master of none" portion of the figure of speech or not. First I suppose is the implication that the jack of all trades is something less than they might otherwise be, after all they aren't a "master" anything right? Secondly however, couldn't it also be said that the diversity that an individual as a "jack of all trades" brings to the table in fact does make him a master of something?

Some of our guys like listening to music when operating their forklifts, is that OK?
Neither OSHA's occupational noise exposure regulation nor the powered industrial truck standard address the use of headphones in the workplace. But ... OSHA has issued Letters of Interpretations that do not recommend the practice. A major concern for a forklift operator is that the operator will increase the volume of the headphones high enough to drown out workplace noise. This can result in the operator not hearing alarms and shouted warnings, as well as exposing him/herself to noise levels that exceed the OSHA permissible exposure levels. If an accident occurs, you will need to be concerned over OSHA's increased use of the General Duty Clause.

What Do You Mean It's out of Stock?
|
It happens to the best of us doesn't it? THE customer calls, you know the one your CSR fought so hard to get. All he wants is the common stuff, filters, some tune up items and a belt. Well guess what? Some or all of it is out of stock. If your lucky maybe the part is coming in on today's stock order but that matters very little when the person on the phone wants assurance that his order is filled now. How can this happen in the day and age of computers? You with your fine Min/Max system and EOQs. Read More
