When considering a Used Forklift
used forklift There are a number of factors that need to be considered when you contemplate the purchase of a used forklift. Toyota Lift of Minnesota recently shared two articles through TuffWerx touching on the high points. This is the first of those articles:

Just like when you or I purchase a used car, opportunities abound to find a used forklift bargain that fits our budget and needs. But there is plenty of need to use caution, to ensure we don't get ourselves in trouble down the road with expense and reliability issues.

Our order pickers don't like wearing a belt or harness and we understand there is no real OSHA rule about it. Why do we need them?

OSHA's powered industrial trucks (PITs) standard, contained in 29 CFR 1910.178, does not have provisions that require either the use of a body harness or safety belt to protect personnel against falls from elevated platforms. However, in the absence of a specific standard, OSHA can enforce Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSH Act) -- which requires employers to protect employees from serious recognized hazards.

Does Brand Matter When Renting a Forklift?
Forklift Rental From an article through Material Handling and Logistics. Some people are snobs when it comes to the brands they buy. Debates can get pretty passionate about who makes the best beer (if you're a guy) or shoes (if you're a gal). But when it comes to cars and lift trucks, men and women seem more practical. While style is nice, the brands most closely tied to safety and serviceability tend to do best with everybody.

But while interviewing industry sources for an article on lift truck fleet management for MH&L's upcoming September issue, one of them told me something that made me go "hmmmm." I'll share this proposition with you in hopes you'll tell me if you agree:

When it comes to rental, branding isn't a factor.

For the Veterans - Free Certification, Additional Dates Set
Know a Vet? Let's Help the Vet!
Sales IconCurrently our next class is scheduled for April 17th You can read more about that through this link.

As announced in by us in December, through Toyota's generosity we will be continually offering additional dates through 2013. A May date has also been set, that class is scheduled for the 8th.

We ask that you consider any veteran you know who may be involved in a job search and suggest this certification to them. Logistics is always looking for dependable personnel, and a forklift certification is often required prior to consideration for employment.

If You're Going to Do It Do It Right
forklifts blurred in warehouse I can think of several customers performing self-maintenance on their forklift fleets where the level of care given is above adequate. That said, there are countless other companies where forklift performance and reliability is compromised. There is an insufficient level of attention given to the needs and requirements of the fleet by the  maintenance staff. I was reminded of this reading the previous month's Toyota Tech Tips. Paraphrasing here, this is a small portion of those tips:

I was warned about buying low cost parts. Isn't saving money my right?

Well yes and no. Like so may things there are things to be concerned with OSHA states "All parts of any such industrial truck requiring replacement shall be replaced only by parts equivalent as to safety with those used in the original design." 1910.178(q)(5)

We Bet The Part, And Raise You The Installation
Parts counter man Toyota's parts quality allows for a 12 month 2000 hour warranty on Toyota Parts. But it goes beyond that. If that part was originally installed by a authorized Toyota dealer, the warranty will also cover the labor to replace that part.

There Is Nothing Inexpensive about a New Facility
warehouse worker on forklift Business is coming back. Some of us are faced with the need for additional space. In a recent article Cisco-Eagle touched on that subject, and pointed out alternatives that should be considered.

The cost of real estate (or lease costs), new equipment, people, regulatory compliance, and potential downtime add up very quickly, even for a relatively small operation. But reconfiguring your current operation has its own challenges. You have to deal with operating in a construction/renovation environment, the potential that the redesign won't serve your needs through future growth, new equipment, and more. It's a difficult choice.

To gauge the feasibility of your current facility, you should arm yourself with as much information as possible. Do you have accurate layout drawings of the facility as it sits, racking, process equipment, conveyor and all else? Surprisingly, many people don't have this, and have to create it as they move forward. You must know clear ceiling heights, column spacing, dock door locations, and other important measurements.
