In Search Of: Annual and Unfunded Maintenance
PRPS is looking to document the value of unmet maintenance needs in state and local parks, outdoor recreation facilities, trails, and greenway infrastructure throughout the Commonwealth. Such financial data will be extremely helpful in the near future as we advocate for new sources and higher levels of funding dedicated to maintenance issues.
Inadequate maintenance is by far the number one problem in parks and recreation as identified in research by DCNR, Penn State University and PRPS. How much of your operating budget is dedicated to maintenance? What is your unfunded need? How much would be needed to catch up with the backlog of all your deferred maintenance projects? Please share your information with Tim Herd at herd@prps.org. Thank you!

Member Request
We are planning our first Community Tree Lighting event--low key, just Santa and a tree on our property, but one of our sponsors wants us to look into having an ice skating rink. Has anyone successfully used one and/or can recommend a vendor to provide a rink and equipment? Other ideas for easy outdoor activities that can use local businesses and not involve our department staff/costs? The event is free.
