DCNR Celebrating 20th Anniversary with New Outreach Tool

Harrisburg, PA - For the month of July, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of its creation with a digital education campaign to inform citizens about its mission and encourage more people to visit Pennsylvania's public lands.

"On July 1, 1995, a bill was signed into law that restructured the Department of Environmental Resources into two cabinet-level agencies - Conservation and Natural Resources and Environmental Protection," said DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn. "Although we had a long history of stewardship through our bureaus, the move made conservation and management of our natural resources a priority, and recognized the importance of our parks and forests to quality of life, tourism and our economy."

To celebrate, Dunn said the department is launching an Instagram account @padcnr, and will feature 30 days of unique posts about the agency on it using #DCNR20. Content also will be shared on Facebook at Pa. DCNR and Twitter through @DCNRNews. Read more

How to Soar over the Ruins of Stinkin' Thinkin'

by Tim Herd, CPRE

When my overcrowded local library was looking to expand, it wasn't the people interested in improving themselves and their community who came out against it, of course, but only those who weren't, or who refused to see the value in a better resource. Some people, bluntly put, prefer ignorance. The worst even take pride in it!

I had a grand-uncle I loved, but his thinking was less than grand. With all his creative ideas, when asked why he didn't get involved in local organizations to make the differences he talked about, he famously declared "What this world needs is a benevolent dictator. And I'm just the man to do it!" Read more.

Member Request

How many of you with municipal pools use different colored wristbands to differentiate swimmers by ability, for example, those who are strong swimmers and can swim to the wall after using the diving board, and those who cannot.

Does your staff administer a test to identify strong swimmers and/or non-swimmers? If members are allowed to bring guests, how do you handle guest access without knowing their ability?

Please send any information and/or guidelines to Diane Hollinger, Recreation Director, Borough of Wyomissing, at dhollinger@wyomissingboro.org.
