Apply Now for a Rail-Trail Mini-Grant in Pennsylvania

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, Northeast Regional Office, is now accepting applications for the Trail Assistance Mini-Grant Program in Pennsylvania.

With funds provided through the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, RTC is able to distribute a small amount of match funding to rail-trail projects in Pennsylvania.

Grant awards average $5,000 or less, with a maximum of $10,000. All projects require a 50 percent (of total project cost) match from the applicant.

The application deadline is Feb. 28, 2014, and awards will be announced March 25, 2014.

Hershey's Track & Field Youth Program

The Pennsylvania Recreation & Park Society, Inc. is pleased to announce they will again sponsor the 2014 Hershey's Track & Field Youth Program.

If you do not already host a local meet your department, agency or school is invited and encouraged to participate in this program. It all begins at the local level with a recreation or leisure service agency, playground program, physical education or special event sponsored by your school district or local track club. Plan to include this activity in your Spring program; as an introduction to your summer program; or as a cooperative program with your local school district and recreation department.

The local meet competition is open to boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 14. There are seven events in this program including four individual track events, a 4 X 100 meter relay and two field events (standing long jump and softball throw). The emphasis is on participation, involvement and the development of physical fitness. While the program stimulates competition, it is not a highly competitive or organized type of program for the local level. It is a program that introduces the aspiring athlete to individual competition and acquired track skills through which personal improvement and personal fitness can be developed.

Local meets can be held now through June 7th. Those holding a local meet will advance winners to district competitions held at designated locations throughout the state during the month of June (date determined by district coordinator). First and second place finishers of District Meets move on to the Pennsylvania State Championship to be held Saturday, June 28, 2014, at the Pennsylvania State University Track. Selected winners of the Pennsylvania State Meet will then form the Mid-Atlantic Regional team, who will compete in the North American Final Meet held at Henry Hershey Field in Hershey, July 31-August 3. National sponsors of this program are The Hershey Company, the National Recreation and Park Association, the National Association for Sports and Physical Education, the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and Key Club.

For more information on this program, please contact the PRPS office or Jeff Hall, State Chair, (814) 231-3071, jhall@crcog.net.
