Profiles in Courage

At a public meeting of the Ross Township Supervisors in the rural Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania last August, a lone gunman with a simmering feud and a semiautomatic rifle opened fire indiscriminately into the meeting room.

At once, Dave Fleetwood, the Township's Zoning officer, recognized the immediate danger for a woman he didn't know and shoved her aside, taking two mortal shots to the stomach.

As wounded officials and attendees alike scrambled for nonexistent cover, the shooter returned to his car and exchanged his rifle for a handgun.

While tending to the fallen Fleetwood and manning a lookout, my friend and colleague Bernie Kozen warned everyone of the shooter's return, and moved into a position to counterattack when he re-emerged in the doorway. Even while the madman was firing more rounds, Bernie tackled him and wrestled him to the floor. Another attendee, Mark Kresh, threw himself into the brawl. NCTRC Cited in the Congressional Record

In an effort to formally recognize National Recreational Therapy Month, Representative Glenn "GT" Thompson, CTRS, (5th District, PA), entered a statement regarding the value and worth of the practice of recreational therapy into the U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Record. In doing so, Representative Thompson acknowledged the role that NCTRC plays in the advancement of RT and the extended protection it offers to the citizens of our nation. Representative Thompson referenced his own distinguished career in RT having served as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) for more than 28 years. The NCTRC Board of Directors extends its sincere gratitude to Representative Thompson for the great work that he has done to advance the profession of recreational therapy.
