Attending the 2013 PA Greenways and Trails Summit -

Getting the Green Light

By Emily Gates, Special Projects Coordinator, PA Recreation and Park Society

PRPS, PA DCNR, and the Summit Planning Committee have developed a summit that is full of valuable sessions, networking opportunities, and hands-on field experiences that attendees will be able to utilize immediately following the Summit!

However, justifying your attendance at the Summit to your superiors can be a challenge due to the budget pressures most municipalities and non-profits are experiencing today. The fact that PA is one of the only mid-atlantic states that offers a statewide greenways and trails conference - and that it only occurs every two years - may not be incentive enough for you to receive approval to attend.

To help you get the "green light" to attend, consider some of the tips below:

  • Find sessions in the registration guide that address specific issues your agency is experiencing and offer to report on those topics to you co-workers who are unable to attend;
  • Share speaker handouts or presentations with co-workers;
  • Share a room and a ride to reduce your travel expenses;
  • Talk to your classmates and return with 5 new contacts experiencing similar issues to your organizations and;
  • Articulate the need for you as a professional to be up to speed on the state and national climate of trails.

Attending the summit will re-energize you, and consequently fill your think tank with ideas that can drive your organization through its current challenges and into the future. So, take these tips and go get 'em. You just have to be there!

Career Pathways vs. Storm Tracks

One long-ago day back on the farm, my Dad, my little brother, and I were washing the blue and white Oldsmobile, when Dad suddenly dropped his sponge on the stones, scooped up my brother and tore for the house, yelling for me to follow. Of course, being the contrary child I was, I didn't. That is, until I spied a rotating column of air swirling dark with field dirt and lots of dried-up cornstalks approaching from the springhouse: OHHH! WAIT FOR ME!
