Denise Shivery has joined the office as our New Education & Training Coordinator.  Denise comes to us with a strong background in project management and event planning.  For the past nine years, she has planned and managed medical education and corporate training programs, including live meetings, webcasts, live television broadcasts.  She is a graduate of Lock Haven University and lives in Bellefonte, PA with her husband and two sons.

Denise replaced Glenn Nelson, who parted ways with PRPS in May.  She looks forward to continuing the good work done by her predecessors, as well as introducing some new offerings, such as webcasting and teleconference.

In order to keep our workshop costs down, we are always looking for available facilities to host our programs at little or no cost. If you have a community center or meeting space that can hold at least 20 people and would like to host a PRPS event, please contact Denise Shivery, Education and Training Coordinator at dshivery@prps.org. In exchange, you will receive one complimentary registration to attend the workshop.

69 How to fail uphill
Pack Attitude to Make Altitude

Everyone's who's ever done anything has failed. Take these for-instances:

  • Babe Ruth, the "Home-run King," who was also the strike-out king of his time
  • Michael Jordan, who was cut from his high school basketball team.
  • WD-40, the fortieth try on a project to develop a water repellent
  • Silly Putty, a gooey but brittle attempt at synthetic rubber
  • Thomas Edison, who invented a thousand ways that light bulbs do not work
  • Thomas Jefferson, who filed for bankruptcy several times
  • Walt Disney, who was once fired from a newspaper for having no imagination or original ideas

Question #1

I work as the manager of Rider Park which is a division of the First Community Foundation Partnership. This non-profit organization seeks to develop a policy on the following:

  1. The use of nature cameras in public parks by private individuals and/or organizations.
  2. Feeding animals in a public park or natural area.

Please send copies of their policies or their recommendations to:

Bonnie Mahoney, Manager, Rider Park

Please respond directly to: bonniem@fcfpartnership.org

Question #2

Our Parks & Recreation Commission has the opportunity to provide input for a proposed 5-year Capital Improvements Plan. Does your local government happen to make use of some benchmark or rule of thumb about the proportion of real estate tax revenue to be applied to park capital improvements (as opposed to streets/infrastructure or building/land/equipment? I'll also welcome any information about your proportion of real estate tax revenue planned or applied to park improvements, even if a benchmark is not followed. Thanks very much for any information you can offer!
