Lean Start-up Using Outsourcing and
Managed Services

Software Consortium delivers core business processes to a healthcare start-up, in record time.

VRx is a Pharmacy Services Management (PSM) company that helps health plans and large employers provide outstanding pharmaceutical care to plan members at a lower cost than traditional pharmacy benefit managers. With today's focus on providing healthcare at lower costs, VRx (myVrx.com) enters the market with game-changing innovation for delivering pharmacy services.

Lean Start-up Advantage

Speed-to-market is a critical business driver when businesses are in start-up mode and/or establishing a market innovation. Outsourcing and having others manage services is almost always the best decision a start-up can make. Added to this equation, VRx was poised for fast growth so failure of systems was a primary risk to mitigate. The executives at VRx were aware of the risks of business start-ups and had their eyes on a lean startup mode, so were focused on outsourcing and managed services, when they approached Software Consortium.

One of their first tactical priorities was developing an eligibility data exchange solution (EDX) to process big healthcare data in a complex and highly secure manner. A core business function for VRx, the eligibility exchange enables automatic processing and exchange of benefits plan eligibility data between VRx customers and partners.

Speed, Competency and Cost Control

Software Consortium (SCI) has a track record for delivering first-to-market solutions across a variety of industries with speed and reliability, with a focus on meeting the client's short and long term goals. VRx engaged SCI to design, develop, test, deploy and support its complex EDX, as well as establish best practices for their systems development life cycle (SDLC), agile and quality assurance. VRx was under pressure, due to anticipating a transition of its largest customer to a new carrier platform within weeks and needed an immediate data exchange solution that was fail-safe.

"The healthcare data exchange is mission-critical for our business. Data feeds must be processed accurately and on-time, so there are no gaps in member coverage. Meeting these requirements can literally mean life or death for a patient that needs their pharmaceutical benefits," says Bethe Price, Vice President of Operations. As the executive responsible for implementation, Bethe kept her eye focused on the project, the business needs, and managing her internal team as well keeping SCI apprised of the tactical priorities, resulting in a smooth implementation for VRx's business and clients.

Leveraging their experience architecting federally-compliant, highly secure, high-transactional volume systems, SCI recommended taking an iterative agile approach for the total lowest cost. The approach gave the VRx team the look and feel of the application, enabling them to make modifications along the way. The final result was a scalable and affordable solution that is providing daily data exchanges automatically at night with complete visibility, without any day-to-day involvement by VRx staff. Securely encrypted and decrypted information is immediately accessible for patient and provider inquiries. A protected web service enables single sign-on functionality and future capabilities were architected for member search, audit trails, benefits analysis and reporting.

By outsourcing and SCI managing the service, VRx rapidly achieved a mission-critical core capability--cost-effectively and with minimum involvement by its staff, enabling the staff to focus on the strategy, business development and growth of the business.

The trusted advisor partnership with SCI continues to help VRx meet the demands of its rapidly growing business. SCI has added additional functionality, as VRx business demands it.
