Jean Ritchie Grant Recipient
We are very excited to announce the 2016-2017 Oak Knoll recipient of the Jeanie Ritchie Grant! Thank you to everyone who donates to MPAEF and to all of the teachers among us who go above and beyond to make our school district the very best!

This year's Oak Knoll Recipient is: Jonathan Coldoff: Hands-on Coding for Kindergartens

The mission of this grant is to enable teachers to pursue innovative teaching programs in their classroom, grade or school and provide educational experiences that students would otherwise not be able to have. The grants are funded by the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation and are an important part of the Foundation's motto: "Investing in Education. Together." District teachers have been applying for JR grants for over 25 years. Each year, teachers with unique teaching concepts prepare a comprehensive grant and present their idea to the JR committee who evaluate the grant to see if it meets the program's three key qualities of innovation, creativity and enrichment.

Congratulations to Mr. Coldoff and thank you for being an amazing role model of innovation and hard work!

2016-2017 Room Parents - Sign up
The room parent program will have a new look next school year!  To streamline the role of room parents and increase the volunteering opportunities for all classroom parents, there will now be two room parents per classroom, with the responsibilities being shared.

So don't miss out!  Sign up now for one of the most rewarding volunteer roles at Oak Knoll.  It's a great way to get to know other parents and your child's teacher, and you'll get to know firsthand what's going on in your child's classroom. Room parents typically help to organize class parties, field trips, and organize parent volunteers when needed. Also, being a room parent doesn't require much on-campus time - so, even if you have little ones still at home or you work full-time, it's a perfect way to get involved!

It is our hope to accommodate everyone, so we appreciate your understanding and flexibility if that is not possible. Please remember that all current room parents must sign up again for next year, including Multi-age class room parents.

Please sign up here to be a 2016-2017 room parent!

Hot Lunch Co-Chair Needed
As we approach the end of this school year, and plan for the next, many volunteers have already stepped up to fill most PTO committee positions for 2016-2017. Thank you all!

We are currently looking for 1-2 additional people to help co-chair Hot Lunch at Oak Knoll, to join the co-chair who is already in place. Hot Lunch is a critically important PTO program, providing lunch to often 300 students each school day, which relies on the work of the co-chairs and daily helpers to operate. As hot lunch co-chairs, you are responsible for coordinating the District-defined program at Oak Knoll, and recruiting/scheduling the volunteers to serve lunch to students each weekday. Please consider this vital, but straightforward, position.

If you are interested in co-chairing Hot Lunch, or you would like to volunteer on another PTO committee, please contact Janelle McCombs.

Volunteer Appreciation Lunch
The annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon was held on May 20 to show our appreciation for the amazing parent volunteers, teachers, and staff who's time and efforts help make Oak Knoll such a special experience for its students. Following the Luncheon, 2016-17 PTO Board Slate and Proposed Budget were approved by the PTO General Membership.

Spanish Program Update
The Fifth Grade children have done a great job creating their restaurant menus in Spanish. For this project they used a lot of creativity and research to develop a restaurant entirely in Spanish. It was a fun surprise sharing the Spanish treats some children brought in to demonstrate their restaurant's daily specials. We are currently learning about animales y las mascotas. Children have been sharing about their pets and creating reports in Spanish about their perfect pet. We also learned the history of the Cinco de Mayo celebrations and how it is a different holiday from Mexican independence-more widely celebrated in the United States than in Mexico.

We are very excited to have heard from the children at the Colegio Santa Maria del Prado in Toledo, Spain. We sent them a video answering their questions and asking several of our own in Spanish. They sent back a bilingual video answering our questions in both Spanish and English. The sense of being connected to a global community has helped them understand how learning a foreign language can bring us all together.

New Signs Around School

Treat "otters" the way you want to be treated....Be Bold!...The thing you are best at is being yourself....Give it your BEST try....Life is a garden. DIG IT!...Speak up!....And many more!

Look out for the new colorful signs around school! These are great quotes from Oak Knoll students this year, when asked what they would say to fellow Otters when passing in school corridors.

Incoming Hillview Volunteer Opportunities
If you are the parent of an incoming 6th grader - welcome!  If your student is a 7th or 8th grader or your 6th grader is the last of several kids who have walked through Hillview's halls - welcome back! WE NEED YOU!

There are several ways that you can volunteer at Hillview; to contribute to this award winning community and connect in a more meaningful way with your child's school.  Like the room parent program at the elementary schools, Hillview has Academy Parents who help coordinate academy-wide activities and assist the teachers in a variety of ways (including recruiting more volunteers.)  We need volunteers to help serve hot lunch, assist in the library and at the book fair, help coordinate staff appreciation events, and so many other ways.

If you are interested in helping out at Hillview beginning next Fall, please send an email to volunteer@hillviewpto.org. We look forward to seeing you then.  Go Hawks!

Marsh Road Closure beginning May 31
The Town of Atherton plans to close Marsh Road on May 31 to August 11, 2016 from Middlefield Road northerly to Fair Oaks Avenue, for construction to replace the Atherton Channel walls and floor.

A detour plan with roadway signage plan can be downloaded here. The closure of Marsh Road will impact traffic throughout the area and limit access to Encinal and Laurel schools. Additional information on impacts to our school busing service will be communicated to the parents. Please be patient and provide extra time to reach your destination. Thank you to our dozens of volunteers who helped on the day of the run and at packet pickup at Fleet Feet to manage this great community event. We literally couldn't have done it without your help. More than one runner gave up their spot to help serve as course monitor so the run could go ahead. Thank you!

A special thank you to Krista Skehan and the team at Personify who did an amazing job creating our new run branding. We also can't forget WL Butler Construction who provided a very cool 1968 Pontiac GTO convertible to pace our runners around the course.

And finally, thank you to the fun team of organizers who volunteered their time in the weeks and months leading up to last Sunday. This race was literally powered by the dedicated energy of the following people in our school community:

Co-chairs:
Tara Moeller and Steve Tonsfeldt.

Organizing Committee:
