Jean Ritchie Grant Recipient
|
We are very excited to announce the 2016-2017 Oak Knoll recipient of the Jeanie Ritchie Grant! Thank you to everyone who donates to MPAEF and to all of the teachers among us who go above and beyond to make our school district the very best!
This year's Oak Knoll Recipient is: Jonathan Coldoff: Hands-on Coding for Kindergartens
The mission of this grant is to enable teachers to pursue innovative teaching programs in their classroom, grade or school and provide educational experiences that students would otherwise not be able to have. The grants are funded by the Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation and are an important part of the Foundation's motto: "Investing in Education. Together." District teachers have been applying for JR grants for over 25 years. Each year, teachers with unique teaching concepts prepare a comprehensive grant and present their idea to the JR committee who evaluate the grant to see if it meets the program's three key qualities of innovation, creativity and enrichment.
Congratulations to Mr. Coldoff and thank you for being an amazing role model of innovation and hard work!

2016-2017 Room Parents - Sign up
|
The room parent program will have a new look next school year! To streamline the role of room parents and increase the volunteering opportunities for all classroom parents, there will now be two room parents per classroom, with the responsibilities being shared.
So don't miss out! Sign up now for one of the most rewarding volunteer roles at Oak Knoll. It's a great way to get to know other parents and your child's teacher, and you'll get to know firsthand what's going on in your child's classroom. Room parents typically help to organize class parties, field trips, and organize parent volunteers when needed. Also, being a room parent doesn't require much on-campus time - so, even if you have little ones still at home or you work full-time, it's a perfect way to get involved!
It is our hope to accommodate everyone, so we appreciate your understanding and flexibility if that is not possible. Please remember that all current room parents must sign up again for next year, including Multi-age class room parents.

The K through Fourth Grade classes have been learning about animales y las mascotas. The children have been learning how to share about their own pets in Spanish and have had fun retelling the story of "La viejecita Que Se Trago Una Mosca" ("There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly"). We also read the Audrey Wood book Veloz Como El Grillo (I'm As Quick As A Cricket). The children already know the pattern of the book, so they have been able to learn the animal vocabulary through acting out the story using movement and rhythm. This helps them learn the language through seeing, doing, and repeating, like children do in their native languages. I enjoy so much visiting the different classes and sharing in the fun of learning a new language!

Treat "otters" the way you want to be treated....Be Bold!...The thing you are best at is being yourself....Give it your BEST try....Life is a garden. DIG IT!...Speak up!....And many more!
Look out for the new colorful signs around school! These are great quotes from Oak Knoll students this year, when asked what they would say to fellow Otters when passing in school corridors.

Marsh Road Closure beginning May 31
|
The Town of Atherton plans to close Marsh Road on May 31 to August 11, 2016 from Middlefield Road northerly to Fair Oaks Avenue, for construction to replace the Atherton Channel walls and floor.
A detour plan with roadway signage plan can be downloaded here. The closure of Marsh Road will impact traffic throughout the area and limit access to Encinal and Laurel schools. Additional information on impacts to our school busing service will be communicated to the parents. Please be patient and provide extra time to reach your destination. Click here for more project information and contacts for the Town of Atherton.
