On Saturday, February 13, teachers and staff from Oak Knoll presented to an audience of over a hundred educators, at the Learning and the Brain Conference in San Francisco!
|
Oak Knoll's 2nd Annual Community Service Fair was held last Monday, February 22. The kids participated in mini service fair projects and got to do things for others. It is a goal of Oak Knoll that every student participate in at least one act of service. This quote from a parent of a 1st grader sums up why we do this: "The fair was a huge hit with my daughter. She wore her sticker (she received from doing a service project) all night and then moved it onto her pjs! She felt so empowered, like she truly made a difference. Thanks!"
We would like to thank the following organizations for coming to Oak Knoll and spending an hour with us: My New Red Shoes Relay for Life Humane Society of the Peninsula There with Care Sunday Friends EPH Cares

February 24 was World Read Aloud Day, a global literacy program celebrating the power of the words. Students in the Calling All Kids Leadership Group went into all the Kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade classes and read them a book.
|
As many of you already know, about 14 classrooms of 2nd - 5th graders are having their own March madness - with brackets for the most popular books in each. It's great to see how each classroom is a distinct reading community with different favorites in different classes. As kids of varying skill levels tackle books of varying complexity, feel free to read these books alongside your Otter. Check out the audiobook from the public library (on CD or e-audiobook). They can clean their room and listen to story. Everybody wins. Read the whole book, read the first few chapters of matched up books to get an idea of which they like better, but read up.
Voting starts the first week of March. Single elimination brackets. One round a week until we have a winner in each class. Part of our reading program at Oak Knoll encourages the social part of reading a great book - and this contest is a fun way to build that. Enjoy!
Can't wait to see what books win! Jacqui Cebrian, Reading Specialist

CDE Release of Student Information
|
Dear MPCSD Parents,
As you may have heard in the news, the California Department of Education (CDE) is currently engaged in litigation regarding the disclosure of students' protected personal information and records arising from the court order in the Morgan Hill Union School District's Concerned Parents Association and the Concerned Parent Association v. California Department of Education lawsuit.
The CDE is being sued, not MPCSD. CDE, not MPCSD, is being asked to provide student identifiable information, which may include names, addresses, and mental/physical assessments of every student enrolled in any CA public school since 2008. There is litigation to block this order; however, there are no guarantees that these blocks will succeed. The only way to ensure that your child's private information will not be released is to complete THIS OBJECTION TO RELEASE form provided by the CDE and follow the directions to submit prior to April 1, 2016.
We are sorry for this inconvenience. We want you to be informed. Thank you, Menlo Park City School District

Outdoor Instruments Bring Music to the Playground
|
The New Year brought music to the playground at Oak Knoll School. Under a large oak tree in the upper yard one can find a collection of musical instruments designed to inspire the love of music and joyful play. Freenotes Harmony Park, the company that has designed and builds these instruments, began putting them in public places sixteen years ago. They are colorful and artfully designed. They are esthetically appealing and built of materials that can withstand the elements and years of use while never going out of tune.
Playing these instruments takes the fear out of learning music. There is no need to learn notes and anyone can walk up and begin playing sounds, rhythms and patterns that sound pleasing to the ear. There are "no wrong notes".
Please click here to read the full piece from Oak Knoll's Mrs. Tee (Music Teacher) and Mrs. Solomon (Science Teacher).

Ollie Salutes Our Nature Zone Volunteer Coordinators
|
Did you know that our Otters have a special part of the upper playground dedicated to playing in nature? We are able to offer it as a lunch recess play option thanks to the help of Nature Zone Coordinators Becky Bullard and Jenny Mosso and their team of monthly volunteers. A few times per month, these Nature Zone volunteers spend their lunch hour overseeing this natural play area and the students that are building forts and making nests inside it. The Nature Zone would not be open without their support, so thank you for making it happen!

Notice to Parents/Guardians: Vaccine Personal Beliefs Exemptions
|
Most students will not be affected by a new California law, SB 277, effective January 1, 2016, because they have already received the required vaccinations for school. SB 277 states that exemptions based on personal beliefs, including religious beliefs, will no longer be an option for the vaccines that are currently required for school. PBEs on file for a child already attending school will remain valid until the child reaches the next immunization checkpoint at Kindergarten or 7th grade.
For more information about school immunization requirements and resources, please visit the website for the California Department of Public Health at www.shotsforschool.org, or contact your local health department or county office of education.
