End of Year Update
Oak Knoll School
June 9, 2015

Dear Oak Knoll Parents,

As we wrap up the year, I reflect on the many wonderful moments as well as the outstanding progress our students have made. From our theme of compassion, service projects, Willy Wonka musical and Science Olympiad to our curriculum development, writing coaches, and 5th grade iPads, our students have had an enriching year! Before I unplug for summer, I wanted to highlight some of the successes around our academic goals for this past school year and shine a light on some of our plans moving forward into next year.

Every year the Oak Knoll Site Council sets rigorous goals that are aligned to our mission: every student and exemplary scholar, a valued friend and a courageous citizen. We have a lot to be proud of! Here are a just a few highlights from the results of the 2014-2015 school goals:

  • 95% of students understand the difference between a growth and fixed mindset.
  • 99% of students understand what it means to be compassionate and are able to describe a compassionate solution to a school yard problem.
  • 93% of students participated in school and/or classroom service projects.
  • 95% of our K-2nd grade students are ending the year reading at or above grade level.
  • 95% of our 3rd-5th grade students are ending the year at or above grade level, 67% above grade level in reading (in 2013-2014 we were 44% above grade level).
  • 100% of our 5th grade English Learners are ending the year at or above grade level in reading.
I am really excited about next year; here are a few reasons why:
  • As a staff, we will engage in a process to further define our school vision and mission. We will examine the programs, enrichment, and the experiences that are essential for all students. This analysis will help us define the K-5 Oak Knoll experience and continuously push us to improve.
  • Out school theme will continue to embed the teaching of compassion, mindfulness, and service in our classrooms.
  • We will build a K-5 scope and sequence for teaching Dr. Dweck's Mindset work to our students, ensuring that ALL Oak Knoll students will learn about having a growth mindset.
  • We plan to implement a World Language pilot program for 5th graders. Our long-term goal for this program is for everyone to learn some Spanish! While 5th graders receive language instruction, all Oak Knoll students will be exposed to Spanish through cultural experiences, assemblies, music, and literature.
  • We will be implementing the Math Expressions curriculum in all classrooms. Teachers will engage in professional development starting their first day back.
  • Make it a point to read the newsletter and join me for Coffee Talks throughout the year.
Enjoy the summer with your kids. Together, take the time to read a book, use your growth mindset to try something new, and practice mindfulness! Oak Knoll is a special place with incredibly hard-working teachers, dedicated staff, loving parents, and amazing students. I am delighted and grateful to be your principal and honored to be following in the footsteps of my mentor, David Ackerman.

With gratitude,
Kristen Gracia
