Oak Knoll Boys (NEW) and Girls Volleyball Registration
|
If your son or daughter is entering 4th or 5th grade for the 2015-2016 School Year, he or she can now sign up for Boys or Girls Fall Volleyball! Each team will learn the basic skills of the game in a fun and encouraging environment on teams coached by parent volunteers. Practices will be held twice a week at Oak Knoll, while weekly games will be played at Arrillaga Gym in Menlo Park. Games will commence mid-September and end mid-November. Parents --- coaching volleyball is a wonderful volunteer opportunity! No experience is necessary--just a positive attitude and a willingness to bump, set, spike, and dig it! Contact Stefano Baldassi, Allison Chao, JulieMcEvilly, Julie Gosler, or Sharon Schick if you would like to coach or if you have any questions. Registration begins on Monday, June 1, at TeamSnap. The cost for the season is $80. Scholarships are available. For more info regarding Oak Knoll volleyball, visit Oak Knoll After School Sports.

Optional Summer Math Practice Provided by MPCSD
|
Dear Parents, This year in MPCSD, we piloted TenMarks, a Common Core designed on-line Math program in various classrooms across different grade levels throughout the District. Given the positive feedback we have received and our impressive student data results, we have decided to implement TenMarks next year in every 3rd-5th grade classroom. Research shows that most children lose 2-3 months of math learning over the summer. We're delighted to inform you about a free program this summer offered by TenMarks, an Amazon Company that will provide your child with access to a powerful, personalized summer math program designed to help them reverse summer learning loss. Click here to find out about how the TenMarks Summer program works ( Spanish version here).

Thank you to the art show volunteers, Domonique Matthews, Jenny Sullivan, Betsy Muhlner and Naed de la Vega who organized and hung over 700 pieces of art to be sure each child had a project to show during portfolio nights. Our fourth and fifth graders had a blast competing in the annual Science Olympiad last Friday!! This is one of the highlights of 4th and 5th grade and inspires a love for science! Thank you to our Committee Chairs: Carolyn Bowsher, Tracy Watt, and Jenny Sullivan who planned and organized the event. Thanks also to Allison Chao, Mark Baker and Theanne Thomson for doing the scoring and awards. Congratulations to Ms. Tom's green Fat Stax for placing first, Ms Veneman's Purple Ponies for finishing second and Ms Sanchez's Real Deal Teal Seals for placing third! Thank you to our awesome team leads: Diana Baker, Dave Bingham, Sally Black, Adrienne Bronstein, Patti Buck, Rhonda Bucklin, Stephanie Chen, Erika Drazan, Kim Grosso, Cyndy Hogan, Annette Lewis, Alison Matthews, Lynn Mickleburgh (Bingham), Lalit Shahani, Gina Skinner, Kris Swanson, Amy Thornborrow, Donna Tompkins, Nancy Witeck Thanks also goes to all the volunteers who helped us on the day! This event needs about 60 volunteers in one morning to make it run smoothly and we couldn't do it without you. THANK YOU! If you would like to be involved in next year's Science Olympiad, please email Christie Connaghan, Alison Matthews, or Amy Thornborrow.

Emily Chiet, Instrumental Music TeacherFavorite thing about Oak Knoll: I love that we embrace experimentation. That "let's try it!" approach is pervasive amongst the staff and the students. We do cool stuff because we're willing to color outside of the lines. (But not in Mr. A.'s class, of course.)A passion of yours: I used to run the instrument petting zoos for Nova Vista Symphony, the orchestra with which I play. I had to give it over to someone else for lack of time, but I love seeing the looks on the kids' faces when they see, hear, and try to play various instruments.A fun fact about yourself: I love sewing, particularly hand-sewn boxes and other organizational items. I've even managed to sell some boxes!A favorite quote: To set all in equilibrium, it is well; to put all in harmony is better. Author: Victor Hugo / Book: Ninety-Three.This was hard; I have a few favorites. :) Rachel Knight, 4/5 Grade Band TeacherFavorite thing about Oak Knoll: I love the family atmosphere and sense of community at Oak Knoll. I also love the students and their willingness to keep an open mind and try something new. Whether it is a new song, dancing with a partner, or song a song from another country.A passion of yours: I am an active member of the American and local Orff Schulwerk Association. I also participate in American Diabetes Association and Children with Diabetes. I walk annually at the Relay for Life (American Cancer Society) in San Jose.A fun fact about yourself: My secret passion is cooking and baking. Thanksgiving has become my favorite holiday and I plan and prep weeks in advance and cook everything (even the pumpkin purée) from scratch. I enjoy baking for parties and friends. I also make baby food for my 6 month old nephew.A favorite quote: "Music is the universal language of mankind." H.W. Longfellow

Sign Up to Be a Room Parent Next Year
|
Don't miss out on being a room parent next year! Sign up now for one of the most rewarding volunteer roles at Oak Knoll. Room parents play a critical role at Oak Knoll, coordinating parties, field trips, and in-class volunteering for the teachers. There are typically 4 room parents per classroom (or 3 in each multi-age homeroom). Sign-ups will remain open throughout the summer until August 20, but we encourage you to sign up as early as possible! Once signed up, you will be contacted on Sunday, August 23, to confirm your placement as a room parent. Please remember that all current room parents must also sign up again for next year, including the looping 4th/5th grade classes. Any questions, feel free to contact Janell Sanford.

Hillview News Co-Editor Needed
|
If you'll have a 6th grader at Hillview next year and would like to get involved and be in the know about all the events happening on campus, here's the perfect opportunity! The Hillview PTO is looking for an enthusiastic, organized volunteer to be Co-Editor of the school newsletter, working with an experienced Editor and seasoned Communications Chair. You won't need to attend meetings or write copy, but will instead work at your own schedule to compile and edit content provided by community members, PTO, and Hillview staff. Best of all, you'll divide the job with your Co-Editor, so you'll essentially have half the year off! If you're interested, please email Michelle Box or Kate Kennedy. Thank you!
