Oak Knoll Biking and Walking Safety
Dear Parents,

As we reflect on the results of our Site Council survey and continue to work to improve student safety, we have some exciting updates to share.  Earlier in the month, Dr. Pat Hines from Safe Moves led an assembly for all of our students on Bike Safety.  Dr. Hines reviewed the importance of wearing a helmet at all times on bikes and skateboards, and shared how they work.  Please see a few of her other important safety tips below:

  • Bike with traffic- the #1 cause of bike accidents is biking on the wrong side of the street

  • Make sure your helmet is snapped on correctly (one strap in front of your ear and the other behind), and do not take it off until you have stopped and are safely off the bicycle

  • Every time you get on a bicycle, check for 4 things:

    • the tires are properly inflated

    • the brakes work

    • the handle bars are tight

    • the seat is tight

  • Pay attention- be aware of cars, dogs, railroad tracks, opening car doors, and gutters

For additional information on bicycle and pedestrian safety, and practice scenarios to review with your children, please read this useful Safety Booklet. Additionally, we are reminding our students of our Oak Knoll Safe Routes to School, and are excited to share that we will be adding a crossing guard at the Oak Knoll and Oakdell intersection.  Thank you for your ongoing support of our safety initiatives and reviewing them with your children to make sure all of our students are safe coming to and from school, and around the neighborhood.

Best,

Leah Kessler
