My New Red Shoes Shoe Drive & Bag Project
|
Tomorrow, Monday, March 2, is Crazy Sock Day at Oak Knoll in celebration of our current compassion project with My New Red Shoes! So put on your wildest and brightest socks! This is the last week of the compassion project with My New Red Shoes, a non-profit organization which helps homeless and low-income children look and feel confident as they start the school year by providing them with new clothing and shoes. Oak Knoll kids from all grades have already designed, sewed and labelled 200 shoe bags! We will continue making bags this week so please come help supervise if you can. We are also very much in need of shoe donations so please consider giving. Details below:
- Brand New Athletic Shoes: Shoes are being collected around school - look out for the donation bins in front of the office and by the large multi. Specifications for on-site donations at the school are linked here. Shoe donations can also be made online via our Amazon link. Please read the instructions carefully on the link to ensure tax receipt delivery. Also please not that if you don't have Amazon Prime, you will be charged shipping.
-
Volunteers (no experience needed): The bag-making will take place during the lunch hour. We need just a few more volunteers for 1.5 hours between 11:45-1:15pm. If you can spare the time to supervise the children while they volunteer their time, creativity and compassion, we want you! Please sign up online.
Any questions, please feel free to contact Meg McGraw-Scherer.

Documentary: "The Mask You Live In" Followed by Q&A with Director Jennifer Siebel Newsom Hillview Middle School, PAC Monday, March 2, 6:30pm
Hillview's Speaker Series is honored to welcome the award-winning documentarian and Second Lady of California, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, to the Hillview PAC on Monday, March 2, at 6:30pm. Commended for her groundbreaking documentary exploring the impact of the media's portrayal of girls in Miss Representation, Ms. Newsom now takes on gender stereotypes and the miseducation of our young boys in The Mask You Live In. Only weeks after its national release, Ms. Newsom is bringing her powerful new film to Menlo Park for YOU! Following the viewing of this film, Ms. Newsom will share the story behind the film and answer audience questions. The evening will likely run a little longer than most of our Parent Ed events in order to accommodate the film (which runs 90 minutes) and time with Ms. Newsom. We will begin at 6:30pm sharp. Because the event is likely to fill up quickly, we suggest you arrive no later than 6:15pm. to secure a seat.
Click here for this year's line up of Hillivew's Speaker Series speakers. These events are open to all district parents and community members and take place in the Hillview Performing Arts Center. Free childcare is provided for all potty trained children. For more information, contact Jennifer Allen.

Book of the Month: The class read-aloud book for March, and the first book in our section of Compassion on Generosity, is Sam and the Lucky Money by Karen Chinn. Sam can hardly wait to go shopping with his mom. It's Chinese New Year's day and his grandparents have given him the traditional gift of lucky money-red envelopes called leisees (lay-sees). This year Sam is finally old enough to spend it any way he chooses. Best of all, he gets to spend his lucky money in his favorite place - Chinatown! But when Sam realizes that his grandparents' gift is not enough to get the things he wants, his excitement turns to disappointment. Even though his mother reminds him that he should appreciate the gift, Sam is not convinced - until a surprise encounter with a stranger. With vivid watercolor paintings, artists Cornelius Van Wright and Ying-Hwa Hu celebrate the sights and sounds of festive Chinatown streets. In her picture book debut, author Karen Chinn tells the affecting story of a child who discovers that sometimes the best gifts come from the heart.
Community Service Fair: On March 13 students will attend an assembly with Free the Children, an organization that was started by Craig Kielburger in 1995 when he was 12. Their message is to inspire our students that no matter what age you are - YOU can make a difference. Then at lunch 1st-5th graders will be able to do small service projects at our Community Service Fair.
Counselor Classroom Visits: Are you a Multiplier or a Diminisher? Nicole will be going into the classrooms to teach the concepts covered in Liz Wiseman's book Multiplier (she is speaking at Hillview on March 12). Students will explore what those two concepts are and discuss how we can all be a multiplier.
