Oak Knoll's Theme of the Year - COMPASSION
|
In prior years, we at Oak Knoll have focused on building emotional well being in our students. We started with "Courage" as our first theme because we wanted to have courageous learners who weren't afraid to try new things. Next, we focused on "Confidence." We wanted our students to have the confidence to believe in themselves and also to advocate for others. This year, we are having the students focus even more intentionally on others, as we begin our new theme of Compassion. This aligns with our mission statement " Every child an exemplary scholar, a valued friend and a courageous citizen" because a valued friend is a compassionate friend.
A recent staff survey reported that our teachers feel Compassion is the most important character trait to work on with our students.
We have broken Compassion into 3 parts. The first part of the year we are going to focus on Empathy, as in, "How do you think the other person feels?" It is easy in most situations for students to think about how they feel, but it is harder to consider the needs of those around them and how others feel.
The second part of the year we will focus on Listening and being Optimistic. To really be a compassionate friend we need to do more than just hear what other people are saying; we really need to listen. When we are considering other people it helps to think positively and to assume the best about one another.
The final part of the year we will concentrate on Generosity. We want the kids to feel the joy that comes from giving.
We also want to give parents a chance to be part of the compassion conversation. Nicole Scott and Jenny Ryan will be hosting a book club with parents using the book: "12 Steps to a Compassionate Life," by Karen Armstrong (dates and times TBD). In addition, along with our administrators, we will be hosting a few parent coffee talks throughout the year.
We are extremely excited about this year's theme. We know that it is going to be a great year on the Knoll and we look forward to growing as a community!

Are You a Parent of a Kindergartner or New Student?
|
Welcome to Oak Knoll School! Join us for the Oak Knoll Kinder & New Parent Social! Hosted by MPAEF Thursday, September 4, 7:00-8:30pm at the Home of Nancy Lieberman & Keith Flaum 325 Ambar Way, Menlo Park
Parents of incoming kindergarteners and new students, we are excited to spend a few hours with you at a fellow Oak Knoll family's home. Also in attendance will be Superintendent Maurice Ghysels, Oak Knoll co-principals, David Ackerman and Kristin Gracia, and leaders from both the MPAEF and Oak Knoll PTO. They will each be present to share about our amazing school and our community-funded school district. This evening is all about meeting other parents and hearing about what is happening at Oak Knoll and in our district. We hope that you will join us for drinks, appetizers, and an engaging evening.
Please RSVP by evite. This is a parent-only event.

BIKING: It's great to see so many families in our school community biking to school. Please review these reminders that will help keep everyone safe:
- wear a helmet and set a good example for your children
- WALK your bikes through the crosswalks
- use hand signals
- ride on the RIGHT side of the road single file and NOT side-by-side
- STOP at stop signs
- remember that PEDESTRIANS have "right of way" in crosswalks - please stop and let them walk FIRST
- WALK your bike from the corner of Oak Knoll and White Oak when coming to school
When approaching the school from Oak Avenue, please dismount your bikes BEFORE the crosswalk and WALK bikes in the crosswalk to the bike racks. Although it is a tempting short-cut to the bike racks, biking across Oak Knoll Lane before the crosswalk cuts across cars leaving the drop-off line and can be dangerous.
CARLINE:
- There is NO LEFT TURN into the carline from Oak Knoll Lane
- Pull as far forward in the line as you can to make room for cars behind you
- Have children exit the car on the CURB side
A big THANK YOU to the Carline Volunteers who are helping our students get to school safely and on time!

Volunteers Needed for Kinder Yard Duty
|
We have an immediate need for volunteers for Kinder Yard Duty! Helping out during kindergarten snack and recess is a wonderful way to see how your child interacts with his/her peers, meet new parents and their children, and help keep our kinders safe and happy. Please consider volunteering during morning recess - the time commitment is from 10:20-11:10am, and you can volunteer as little or as often as your schedule allows. Contact Alison Buchanan for more information or to sign up.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!! Want to earn free lunches? Meet fellow Oak Knoll parents? Say hello to your child at lunchtime?? Hot lunch is a great place to offer your time!
In order to offer hot lunch to our students we rely solely on parent volunteers to serve the lunches. Volunteer as frequently as you'd like throughout the year, no experience necessary, no cooking, simply help distribute pre-ordered hot and cold lunches from Choicelunch and earn credits toward free lunches for your child(ren) for each shift worked. The more you volunteer, the more free lunches you get!
To join the hot lunch team please email Patti Buck, Melissa Coleman, or Emily Record Buck.

PTO and Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation
|
PTO On-Campus Campaign Starts This Week!
One of the most frequently asked questions is Why does my family need to support both the PTO and the MPAEF? These two organizations both support Oak Knoll in complementary ways.
The PTO funds curriculum enrichment, field trips, community-building events and classroom supplies - all of which are important to Oak Knoll's community of students, teachers, and parents.
The Menlo Park-Atherton Education Foundation raises money for the District's operating budget. The MPAEF's grant to the District funds more that 32 teachers this year - including classroom teachers; credentialed librarians; art, drama and music teachers; and elementary science aides. This funding is essential to maintaining small class sizes and a comprehensive curriculum.
If you have other questions about the PTO, the MPAEF, our fundraising, or school funding in general, click HERE for the answers.
