There will be a Parent Meeting with Menlo Atherton High School Principal Matthew Zito and Sequoia Union High School District Superintendent Jim Lianides regarding SUHSD boundary changes
Monday, October 7 at 7:00 p.m. in the Hillview Middle School Performing Arts Center (PAC)

International Walk to School Day - This Wednesday
|
Join Superintendent Maurice Ghysels and millions of people around the world in walking to school this Wednesday. Here is what to do:
- Pick up free safety vests for adults & children from the school office. Being visible = more safety.
- Wear your safety vests and walk to Oak Knoll on Wednesday
- Check the Safe Routes to Oak Knoll map and study these Pedestrian Safety Tips.
- Make plans to walk with friends and neighbors.
- If your student rides the Sequoia bus, please watch for a permission slip for your student to walk with an Oak Knoll staff member from Hillview to Oak Knoll.
- If Hillview is on your route to Oak Knoll, please bring your student and join the Bus Riders in walking
- Walk your bike for the last block and participate too! Wear a safety vest & helmet.

Caring and Sharing Book Drive - Next Week
|
It's time once again for Oak Knoll's annual caring & sharing book drive. Please donate your gently used books (Pre K - 8th grade) from October 15 - 17. Books will be donated to local kids and area non-profit organizations. Oak Knoll's Brownies and Girl Scouts will be out collecting your donations each morning. We are also looking for volunteers to help with sorting the books after the drive.
For questions or to volunteer, please feel free to contact Kathy Motamedi, Lisa Langer or Nancy Lieberman.
Please clean out your shelves to make room for your new book fair books!

Ollie wants to give a High Five out to the wonderful chairs of the Caring and Sharing Committee - Kathy Motamedi, Lisa Langer and Nancy Lieberman and the girl scout troops who helped them collect lots of Halloween Costumes and decorations. They will be donated to local kids and area non-profits serving children and families.
Ollie would also like to thank the PTO Membership Committee who spent many hours working on the Joint Campaign this year. A HUGE high five goes out to Cyndy Hogan, Kathy Motamedi, Tamara Russel, Meg Scherer, Tracy Watt and Jill Wurster for helping us fund the essential programs and services that support our children, teachers and families!

Oak Knoll Receives Grant from ING U.S. to Get Kids Moving!! |
ING Run For Something BetterŪ School-Based Running Programs Help Students
Learn Healthy Choices and Take Responsibility for Their Own Fitness
ING U.S. announced Oak Knoll School (Menlo Park, CA) as one of 59 recipients from 26 states across the U.S. to receive $2,500 grant to inspire students to be more active and adopt healthy choices to carry into adulthood. The money from ING Run For Something Better grant will be used to expand Oak Knoll's current running program, the Otter Mileage Club. The monies will be used to purchase program materials; equipment to document and record student laps; and materials to recognize and celebrate student achievement and the attainment of personal fitness goals. Otter Mileage will conclude with Menlo Park City Schools, Are You In RUN in June, 2014.

The M-A Parent Education Series offers a unique, school-wide program designed to educate parents about critical issues related to the academic, physical, mental and social-emotional health of their students.

Women Basketball Players. Sundays at 10:00am. Looking for additional players for a women's basketball group. Oak Knoll/Hillview/Encinal/Laurel moms that play basketball on Sundays at 10AM in the Oak Knoll multi.Whether you have played before or would like to learn, we would love to have you join us. Bake a Cake for a Kid In Need. Cake4Kids is seeking volunteer bakers to bake one or two cakes a year to give at-risk youth a birthday cake who otherwise wouldn't have one. This is a great opportunity for a service project you can do mostly from home with kids of all ages. To sign up or learn more, click here.
Halloween-tastic craft session. Wednesday, October 30 at 4:00pm. Menlo Park Library, 800 Alma Street, Menlo Park. The Menlo Park Library will provide a Halloween-tastic craft session for your enjoyment. Please join us to create your own special Halloween creation. Check out the flyer for more information.
Submit the Documentary: The Virtual Reality of Cyberbullying. Monday Oct. 21 at 4:00pm
UNAFF; Camera as Witness presents a free showing of Submit the Documentary: The
Virtual reality of Cyberbullying at Sacred Heart School, Harman Auditorium, 150 Valparaiso Ave., Atherton.
Trick or Treat Street. October 30, 5-7pm. Menlo-Atherton High School; bring your 0-10 year old for a night full of fun activities and door-to-door trick or treating at Menlo-Atherton High School. Email trickortreatstreet2013@gmail.com if you need a costume.
Vote on Measure W! Please vote on Measure W -- a bond for the Menlo Park City School District to build an additional elementary school in the Willows to alleviate overcrowding at Laurel, Encinal and Oak Knoll schools and accommodate the district's growing student population. Measure W is a $23 million bond which is estimated to have a 25-year term and cost property owners $8.70 per $100,000 of assessed (not market) value each year. You should be receiving your ballot this next week to vote on Measure W. If you are a permanent absentee voter, please vote as soon as you receive your ballot (and before October 28th). If you need to register to vote, please register at www.shapethefuture.org. Anyone who registers before October 20th will be eligible to vote in this election.
