Kindergarten and 1st grade Parents:  New Opportunity to Enroll in K-2 Multi-Age

Next year we are initiating a second strand of K-2 Multi-Age. Our new multi-age cohort will follow the same structure and program as our existing group. Three teachers will team together in three connecting classrooms. The children will stay in the program with their teachers through 2nd grade. The new team will collaborate with the present team to design their theme based instruction. Reading and math will be delivered in flexible ability groups across the three rooms. Students will participate in Suzuki violin instruction as their core music program. Teachers for the new team are Ms. Lavezzo, Ms. Boatright and a third teacher who will be announced very soon.

Creating this new strand allows us to add students who will be 1st and 2nd grade students next year. If you are interested in participating, please send an email or note to Mr. Ackerman by April 15. If there is a need for a lottery it will be conducted on April 17 with notices mailed home shortly following the lottery.

School-wide Assembly Tomorrow - Writing as a Launchpad

Tomorrow, Monday, April 15 we will be having a school-wide assembly about 'Writing as a Launchpad'. Award-winning, Stanford-educated author, Mister Lemur will be visiting our school.

Monday, April 15 - Homemade Cards:
Please have your child bring a homemade card of appreciation to your teacher and aide.

Tuesday, April 16 - Extra Volunteer Help:
The room parents in your class will send a request if additional volunteer help is needed.

See info below

Friday, April 19 - Small Treat for the Teacher and Aide:

The room parents in your class are coordinating this.

Flower Day is THIS Wednesday, April 17

Please have your child bring a flower to the classroom the morning of Wednesday, April 17.  If you do not have flowers in your own yard, you are welcome to purchase an inexpensive flower from a local store.  Please make sure your child does not pick flowers from our school neighbors' yards.

We still need some volunteers to help from 8:00am until about 8:45am to help collect flowers, arrange bouquets in vases and to deliver the arrangements back to the classrooms for the teacher and aide. Please email Domonique Matthews or Noelle Carpenter if you would like to help.

Stephen Kent - Didjeridu Dreamtime Assembly

This past week, all students at Encinal and Oak Knoll were treated to a very unique performance by Stephen Kent, a world re-known Didjeridu performer.  During the Didjeridu Dreamtime assemblies, Stephen introduced students to one of the world's most ancient cultures - the Australian Aborigines - by sharing with them the sound and the culture of the didjeridu, as well as information about the history, geography and wildlife of Australia.  By using the didjeridu to mimic the sounds of animals in the Australian "bush", Stephen demonstrated how the didjeridu can communicate and tell musical stories. Students also learned how didjeridus are made from tree trunks that have been hollowed out by termites, and decorated using natural materials.

Ask your child what he/she learned from the assembly.  It was truly amazing to hear him play!

Mr Kent will be performing at Laurel on Monday and Hillview on Tuesday and participate in Hillview's 7th grade Survival Fest on Thursday.  A final part of the grant is to work with a small group of Hillview students, teaching them how to build didjeridus out of pvc pipe, circular breathe and make music on their own dijeridus.

If you want to see and hear some examples of his music, check out his website.

Special thanks to the MPAEF Foundation for providing the Jeanie Ritchie Grants!
