Morning Car Line Changes!
As many of you have noticed, we are staffing morning car line with
staff and parent volunteers which has reduced the amount of student
tardies and improved the flow of traffic.
To help keep the flow of cars moving, please observe the following:
HAVE BACKPACKS ON KIDS' LAPS (not in car trunks) - have kids ready to release their seat belt with backpacks in-hand once you come to a full
stop
PULL ALL THE WAY FORWARD - we need to fill the entire car line with cars
DO NOT GET OUT OF YOUR CAR - we have staff and parents who will open
your car door for you
DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR UNATTENDED - if you need to have a long goodbye
with your child, you should park and walk-in to school
KIDS SHOULD EXIT CURB-SIDE - move car seats to the curb-side of your
car if needed - it is unsafe for kids to exit the car into traffic
If you would like to volunteer to help with our morning car line,
please email Betsy Muhlner.

MPAEF Campaign Continues Strong into 2013!
Our annual campaign has been up and running for several months now and over the holiday break we've been busy gathering important data to share with our parent community. This status update will help us to prepare for the second half of the campaign and to set strategies towards reaching the District's $4 million need.
Coming Soon...Look for activities and events that will support our campaign and schools, including:
- An exciting announcement from your school's principal later this week that we hope will inspire new donors and increase donations!
- MPAEF Auction -- save the date for April 27! Planning for our Spring auction is already underway and event details will be released shortly! Contact Karen Dearing or Cyndy Hogan to help with auction solicitations, event planning and support, decor, marketing, raffle and more!
- A new District-wide family fun event in June that will bring students and parents together from all four schools -- all in the name of raising dollars for our kids' education!
As we start this new year, please consider making a gift that will materially impact your child's educational experience. Your gift matters!

REMINDER!
DO NOT WALK THROUGH THE PARKING LOT - pedestrians cause cars to stop
unnecessarily and prevent a smooth flow of cars in & out of the
parking lot

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - Traffic Safety
Have you ever worried about your child's safety when riding his/her bike to school? Have you ever been frustrated by the traffic around school? Do you find the carline aggravating at times? A new PTO committee is determined to work on some of these issues.
Starting this month, we are targeting several areas to station volunteers to educate and direct parents and students how better to get to and from school to increase safety and ultimately efficiency. We will need a few parents each morning, rain and shine, 7:45-8:10 to be at these posts, directing parents and students. Prior to this, we will run spots on KNOL educating students about safety and the implementation of some new procedures. The hope is that by re-training parents and students, teaching some better habits, we can create a more safe environment for our students while traveling back and forth to school. We will start with the morning drop-off at first, expanding to afternoons later.
If you are interested in helping out, please contact Betsy Muhlner.
|
Ollie gives two big flippers up to Betsy Muhlner & Karen Wang who are spearheading the effort to improve traffic and safety issues around school. This includes improving our morning car line process and reminding drivers to pull all the way forward in the morning to try to unload as many kids at the same time. The amount of student tardies has improved and many parents and caregivers are extremely pleased with the new process. Please extend your gratitude to them by following the new process and making sure your kids are ready to get out of the car when you pull up to the curb.

A Special Thank You From the Lunt Family!
Dear Oak Knoll Staff, Parents and Students,
We are so grateful for your kindness and generosity in helping us get a wheel-chair accessible van for our sweet daughter, Lucy. All of the donations were so unexpected and so thoughtful... you must all be such kind and special children to be so generous and considerate to us.
You will see us driving around the neighborhood in a silver van that looks like it has an extra-low floor. We'll try and wave or honk to say "thank you!"
We cannot adequately express how grateful we are for such a caring and generous community. We feel so fortunate that we are able to live around so many wonderful people.
Many Thanks!
The Lunt Family (Chad, Cherisse, Dallin, Jocey, and Lucy)
P.S. If you check out our blog at www.chadncherissefamily.blogspot.com, you can check out a video we made to show you how much you have done for us!

5th Grade Families - Submit Your 5th Grader's Baby Photos for Oak Knoll Yearbook!
Attention 5th Grade Families: We need your BABY PHOTOS! It's a tradition at Oak Knoll to have baby pictures of our 5th graders in the yearbook. If you would like to have your child's picture appear in this year's yearbook, you may submit either a digital image or a hard copy. Note, photos between the ages of 3 and 12 months are best.
Hard copy: Have your child put his/her photo in the large, manilla envelope marked "Yearbook" in their classroom. Make sure to label the back of the photo with your child's name and teacher. Be sure to have your child write their name on the attached list on the envelope for tracking purposes. There will be a "back-up" manila envelope in the Yearbook folder in the PTO box in the office.
Digital Image (preferred method!) - Please e-mail the digital photo, with the child's name, to Rhonda Bucklin.
Important: If you would like the photo returned to you, attach a note letting us know and we will return it to your child's teacher later in the year.
All photos are due no later than Friday, February 8th!

For Oak Knoll parents and caregivers
Wednesday, February 27th at 6:30-8:30pm
Oak Knoll Gym
Sponsored by Oak Knoll PTO (free to attend)
People Safety skills help people be safe with people at home, at school, online, out in the world... everywhere. They also help strengthen important relationships. Learn ways to help young people learn and use age-appropriate People Safety skills on an everyday basis to have safer, more positive experiences with people, including strangers, siblings, peers, and other people they know.
During the workshop, we will practice how to help kids:
* Be and act aware and confident
* Check with adults if anything seems unsafe
* Move away from possible problems
* Follow Stranger Safety rules
* Stay safe from hurtful words
* Use voice as a safety tool
* Set clear boundaries
* Say "No" or "Stop" clearly and respectfully
* Deal with other kids poking, pushing, grabbing, etc.
* Use safety plans if lost in a store, park, or library
* Get help from busy adults - and persist!

The Friends of the Menlo Park Library present a special evening with Stanford Psychology Professor and Author Dr. Carol S. Dweck, PhD, whose work has demonstrated the role of mindsets in student motivation and has shown how praise for intelligence can undermine motivation and learning. With a growth, rather than fixed, mindset people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work-brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment.
