May 2016 Preservation News & Events
Celebration of Preservation on May 24 in the Ohio Theatre
With almost 30 applications, the Celebration of Preservation jury had some hard deliberations this year, but thanks to the jury members' perseverance, fourteen amazing projects will be recognized on May 24. Join us at the Ohio Theatre at Playhouse Square for this festive, exciting program that applauds preservation in Northeast Ohio. The program will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed immediately by a reception. Tickets for members of AIA Cleveland or CRS are just $15! Many thanks to our event sponsor: Platinum Sponsors Sandvick Architects, Inc. and  The Sherwin-Williams Company; Silver Sponsors Turner Construction Company and Westlake Reed Leskosky.

This Place Matters
Celebrate Preservation Month
This year, celebrate National Preservation Month with three little words: This. Place. Matters. May is National Preservation Month, and for 2016 the National Trust for Historic Preservation invites you to share the places that matter to YOU. Visit their website and download This Place Matters materials. Use the signs and social media tag #ThisPlaceMatters to take photos at the places you love and follow @SavingPlaces on IG and Twitter to see additional places that matter! Locally, CRS and other preservation organizations are offering programming for Preservation Month. The calendar of events in this issue of Perspectives has details.

Nominate to the 11 Most Endangered List
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is now accepting nominations for the 2016 list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, which will be announced on Wednesday, October 5. Since 1988, the National Trust has used this list to raise awareness about the threats facing some of the nation's greatest treasures. The 11 Most Endangered List has identified more than 250 sites to date and has been so successful in galvanizing preservation efforts that only a few of those sites have been lost. The nomination period for this year will end on Wednesday, June 15.

Support Ohio's World Heritage Nomination
Join the Ohio History Connection, the National Park Service, and others in urging the Ohio General Assembly to support Ohio's first World Heritage site, the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks. Composed of the 2,000-year-old American Indian mounds located at the Newark Earthworks, Fort Ancient near Lebanon, and Hopewell Culture National Historical Park in Chillicothe, the Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks is closer than ever to achieving UNESCO status. The Ohio General Assembly now is voting on two concurrent resolutions in support of Ohio's World Heritage Nomination, Senate Concurrent Resolution 16 introduced by Senator Jay Hottinger (R-Newark) and Senator Bob Peterson (R -Sabina) and House Concurrent Resolution 33 introduced by Rep. Gary Scherer. Now's the time to tell the Ohio General Assembly that you support Ohio's World Heritage Nomination and help Ohio gain it's first UNESCO World Heritage site.

Park Break: Learning Fellowship Opportunity in Detroit
Are you a graduate student thinking about a career in cultural sites, parks, or protected areas, or do you know someone who is? Park Break 2016 is a learning opportunity that will be held in Detroit this summer as part of the National Park Service's Urban Agenda. Working under the close supervision of historic preservation staff, students will explore four nationally and locally significant sites of music in the city of Detroit. The session will be held from August 8-12, 2016. The deadline to apply for this program is May 31.

Honorary Life Trustee Luncheon
On April 21, the Cleveland Restoration Society brought together our Honorary Life Trustees for a celebratory luncheon. Our organization has successfully made an amazing journey from a staff of one to a team of twelve dedicated professionals due to the abiding commitment and consistent support of our trustees, especially our Honorary Life Trustees. Their thoughtful engagement has helped guide the Cleveland Restoration Society through challenging and rewarding times. We can't thank them enough.
Schofield SNOOP!
CRS's April SNOOP! of the Schofield Building provided members with a sneak peek of the building's newly designed interiors. The historic Schofield building has been turned into luxury apartments and a boutique hotel. Early in March the Kimpton Hotel  opened for business. The building's restaurant, Parker's Downtown, will be opening later this month. Almost 30 members attended this event and got to see completed apartments, hotel rooms and the beautiful 1st floor ballroom. Our thanks to Marcie Gilmore of CRM Companies Inc. for a great tour!
