April 2016 Preservation News & Events
FirstEnergy Lake Shore Power Plant Update
The Lake Shore Power Plant is a monumental symbol of Cleveland's industrial and economic strength, now mostly dormant. Its site is a rare large tract of land overlooking I-90 and Lake Erie. The plant, built in stages between 1915 and the 1970s, was shut down last April, after owner FirstEnergy determined that changes to meet federal emissions standards would be too costly. FirstEnergy applied to the City of Cleveland for a permit to demolish the plant. Preservation experts from Cleveland Restoration Society toured the site in February and March. In view of the significance of this structure, and in recognition of the importance of industrial history to Cleveland's heritage, the Cleveland Restoration Society provided testimony at public meetings in support of a professional evaluation of the preservation potential of the plant.

Cleveland's Design Review Committee tabled t
he demolition request to allow for more time to analyze the preservation viewpoint on March 31.  However, on Friday, April 1, the Cleveland Planning Commission approved FirstEnergy's request.  Demolition of the Lake Shore Power Plant will be a significant loss of Cleveland's industrial heritage. Large and powerful structures that fueled industry and a growing population are Cleveland's monuments of greatness. Today and into the future they will symbolize and prove the importance of Cleveland in America's history.

Nominate to the 11 Most Endangered List
The National Trust for Historic Preservation is now accepting nominations for the 2016 list of America's 11 Most Endangered Historic Places, which will be announced on Wednesday, October 5. Since 1988, the National Trust has used this list to raise awareness about the threats facing some of the nation's greatest treasures. The 11 Most Endangered List has identified more than 250 sites to date and has been so successful in galvanizing preservation efforts that only a few of those sites have been lost. The nomination period for this year will end on Wednesday, June 15.

Cultural Gardens Celebrate
100 Years
The Cleveland Cultural Gardens first opened in 1916 with just the Shakespeare Garden but have expanded to represent over thirty different cultures in recognition of the diversity that is Cleveland today. The gardens were founded with the philosophy of "Peace through mutual understanding" and have incorporated statues and figures from around the globe with an emphasis on the common struggle of the everyday man, woman, and child. To celebrate their centennial, the Cleveland Cultural Gardens are hosting a series of celebrations, beginning with a gala on April 8 and culminating in the Annual One World Day event on August 28.

Sale at Historic Oakwood Club
Greenwald Antiques has announced a sale of the contents of the OakwoodClub, a historic Jewish golf club at 1516 Warrensville Center Road in Cleveland Heights, founded in 1905.
