March 2016 Preservation News & Events
SNOOP! Around Cleveland with CRS
Almost 60 people attended our recent SNOOP! of the Drury Plaza Hotel, helping us open up the 2016 tour season with a bang! Thanks to everyone for their interest in the building and project. We sold out this tour in record time! Representatives from the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation joined us as well as a group from the Ohio Capital Corporation for Housing in Columbus. The Drury Hotel was flattered to receive so much interest in their adaptive use project. A big thank you to all of CRS's donors, who help us highlight the importance of historic preservation in our communities and region. To see pictures from the tour, visit our Facebook page or Instagram . More SNOOPS! are already scheduled.

Coming up very soon is a SNOOP! of the Ohio Theatre on Saturday, March 19 at 10:00 a.m. The theatre opened on February 14, 1921 and featured a frescoed ceiling, stately Corinthian columns and three original murals by a famous Italian artist. All of these details were lost during the lobby fire in 1964. A $3 million gift from the George Gund Foundation is allowing the Playhouse Square Foundation to restore the lobby. SNOOP! behind the scenes of this Cleveland landmark on Saturday, March 19.

ACHP Wants Your Input for Preservation50
The Advisory Council on Historic Preservation is reviewing the challenges and opportunities facing the national preservation program on its golden anniversary, founded by the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966. The product will be a report submitted to the incoming Administration and the 115th Congress. Obtaining the public's views is an important component of the process to develop these recommendations. The ACHP has posted initial observations on the challenges and opportunities facing the national preservation program as a basis for further discussion and is asking for your comments on The National Historic Preservation Program at 50: Challenges and Opportunities. The deadline to comment is March 11.

Curtis Block
Lakewood Takes Ownership of Landmark Building
The City of Lakewood is now the owner of a historic building bearing the name of Lakewood's earliest settlers. The Curtis Block building at the corner of Marlowe and Detroit Avenues is historically significant, and new ownership by the city makes it part of an overall plan to redevelop and revitalize properties in the heart of downtown Lakewood. The Lakewood Historical Society notes that the corner of Detroit and Marlowe is one of the last intact corners from the streetcar era and the Curtis Block is an anchor of that corner, once a vital retail building. Plans for Historic Property in Hudson
Adjacent to the West Green in Hudson, the Merino family intends to restore the historic 1825 Baldwin-Buss Merino House. However, the proposed development brings several concerns, including relocation of the house, parking, new retail space despite current vacancies in town, the building height of new construction as compared to existing surrounding structures, and how the design would look from the Village Green, Main Street / east to west view. The architect has made changes to the original plan, in response to these concerns, and the next round of approvals will occur in March. On Wednesday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m., at Town Hall, the Architectural and Historic Board of Review will confirm whether or not the massing and blocking of the revised plan, including moving the Baldwin-Buss Merino house approximately 40-50 feet to the south and surrounding it with new 2-3-story residential and commercial construction is appropriate for the location. The community is encouraged to attend with questions, comments, and concerns, so that the AHBR can have a clear understanding of the matter, before passing their recommendation to Planning Commission. On Monday, March 14 at 7:30 p.m. at Town Hall, Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing for final approval of the plan. Again, the community should plan to attend and share any questions or comments that can add to an informed discussion and decision. Once Planning Commission reaches a final decision, architectural and design details will then be reviewed at a later AHBR meeting.

Thanks for Your Support!
This year's annual Community Luncheon was a great success! With over 300 attendees, we sold out the Mint Ballroom at The 9 and raised almost $10,000 more than our projected goal! Thank you to all who attended and helped us welcome both Congressman Mike Turner (R-OH, 10th District) and Merrill Hoopengardner (President, National Trust Community Investment Corp). The fabulous turn-out illustrated our region's support for federal historic tax credits and helped the Cleveland Restoration Society show off the fabulous preservation projects occurring in our city. A special thank you to our Platinum Event Sponsors: Precision Environmental Co. and Sandvick Architects, Inc.; Gold Sponsors: Coon Restoration and Sealants, Inc. and PCS Builders; and all of our Table Hosts.
